Mouse in the house

Joel Thomas Zimmerman is probably an unknown name in dance circles, but if you call him by his stage name deadmau5 (pronounced "dead mouse") the whole world would know who we are talking about. The Canadian progressive – house music producer and performer heads to Mumbai for his debut concert. Deadmau5, will then continue his three-city India tour with stopovers in Bengaluru and Delhi, as part of the Sunburn Arena.

The Canadian Producer is enjoying his superstardom fresh out of being the winner of the IDMA best Breakthrough Artist Award.

Ranked #5,Sunburn Arena makes all dreams come true with the man himself bringing his signature sounds to the shores of India In an email interview the 33 year old DJ talks about his tour and his love for India.

How does it feel to play for the first time in India?

It’s an incredible feeling. I’m so kicked about meeting my Indian fans and to see how well they receive my music.

What have you heard of Indian Music - DJs and Bollywood if any?

Oh yes! I am a diehard fan of Mr. Daler Mehndi and his track Tunak TunakTun.

What is a Deadmau5 show like and what can fans expect?

I would want to keep it under wraps and let it be a surprise..

What is the image like and what does it represent?

It’s a mouse, not a bunny. It’s an extension of who I am that makes me exclusive. It’s my novelty factor, my USP, the reason for who I am today.

Why the name Deadmau5 and why did you take it?

My father claims that when I was in my early teens, he was chatting with a friend on his computer, which then abruptly shut off, claiming that it smelled like burnt wire and had a strange odor. I dismantled his computer and happened to find a dead mouse and soon became known as the "dead mouse guy" among friends. So I tried to change my name to "Deadmouse" in an online chat room but, since it was too long, I shortened it to "deadmau5".

What do you think of the EDM scene at the moment?

Well I think the rage for Electronic music is increasing day by day. There are more and more dance music enthusiasts and we are not here to think about its temporary existence. If it has to dwindle it will.

What do you plan to see /memories you plan to take from India?

India is a country with an unquenchable thirst for dance music at the moment. I cannot wait to come check out India! It’ll be my first time. The Indian culture drives me all the way. There’s something about this country and the people, an amazing warm and cultured vibe. I’m super kicked about my gigs in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi for the first time ever.
