The singer/songwriter's sophomore release has overtaken Daft Punk's Random Access Memories to score the highest number of online listens in a seven-day period.
Sheeran's X broke the 6.3 million mark during the first week after its debut exceeding Daft Punk's previous record of around 6.2 million.
Sheeran's record-breaking streaming numbers just seem to be the cherry on top of the x cake. The record also became the fastest-selling album of 2014 in Sheeran's home country, moving over 182,000 copies in its initial seven days. The smashing numbers for x helped Sheeran Break the 2014 numbers of Coldplay, who sold 14,000 less copies of Ghost Stories than Sheeran's x following its release, according to Official Charts Company.
X is also anticipated to debut at No. 1 in the United States. The new record is set to be Sheeran's first No. 1 in the States, with sales of over 200,000.
Ed Sheeran released x internationally on June 23, a record that blends together different singer-songwriters traditions, from rapping to acoustic folk to funk. The record was led by single "Sing."
