CandyFloss, which is a collaborative duo between Amartya Chakrabarti and Angad Bhatia, where the duo try to explore what synthwave/synthpop means to them, while often drawing inspirations from the 60s psychedelic movement. Angad Bhatia is a musician from the bands Festacorn and GreyFade, from Mumbai.
CandyFloss was formed in late 2018 sharing the duo’s appreciation for The Beatles and the 80s Disco sound, the two started experimenting with electronic synthpop. The duo released their debut single Alien Time Machine in 2018, which was followed by another single Lime Coda.
This sentiment is more than present in their venture - Scoop Out the Sun a 2 song pack that goes over themes of childhood nostalgia, broken friendships and challenges of young adulthood.
To put in in perspective, it is a tale in two chapters, diving first into childhood nostalgia, broken friendships, and a possible adventure with psychedelics.
Ice Cream of Summers is a synthpop tribute to the 60s flower-power sound, while still staying true to its roots. “The hooks and the harmonies are a gentle reminder of the things we once considered significant, but now feel too fickle to revist” says Bhatia. Velvet Swerve (feat. rapper Ayaan) on the other hand, is a track to drive down to, on a purple highway. “You’re in the car with a lover at the wheel and the outrun is takes over. The track features Mumbai rapper Ayaan, whose lyrics add mileage to the make-believe system our protagonists find themselves locked in” reveals Bhatia.
While the two tracks are distinct in tone, a common mood they share is that of fragility, evident in their finales. The pack goes over the themes of young adulthood, escapism and bleak realities.
Scoop out the Sun is set to release on 19th June 2020 on all streaming platforms. There’s also a pay-what-you-want option on Bandcamp to pick up a digital copy and support the band.
