One of the finest and most successful jazz drummers and composers from the country, Tarun Balani is back with his genre bending quartet Dharma releasing their first single Dr.Escher off their new EP ‘The Shape of Things to Come’ scheduled to be released on 2nd October 2020.
The music of ‘Dharma’ represents Balani’s vision as a composer inspired by his Indian roots yet drawing from a world of influences and synthesising its expression in new improvised music. The sonic architecture of the band reaches a new pinnacle with a brand new line - up featuring New York native trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, Finnish guitarist Olli Hirvonen, alongside his long time friend and band mate pianist Sharik Hasan from India.
Balani draws the listeners into his world of sonic storytelling and provides an apt title to his new EP ‘The Shape of Things to Come’, presenting a sonic dichotomy with the use of pure acoustic and electronic sounds
Following the release of ‘Dharma’ and two European tours in 2019, the latest EP is scheduled to be released on 2nd October 2020 with two phase wise single releases, the first one Dr.Escher which was released on 7th August
Dr Escher draws influence from the works of Dutch artist M.C Escher, and the words of Dr. B.R Ambedkar. Balani amalgamates these two influences through warm piano tones, vintage synth sounds, lush guitar textures, trumpet with effects and a soaring composition.
Recorded live at Bunker Studio, New York with Grammy winning producer, John Davis.
