With over 150 million views on YouTube, the most Shazamed song in the world Jerusalema took the planet by a storm with its catchy beats and inspired lyrics. The song featuring Nomcebo Zikode, has been created by Master KG, a South African DJ and record producer. Streamed over 66 million times on Spotify, the song also encouraged a globally viral dance challenge entitled #JerusalemaChallenge.
The internet continues to be flooded with videos of everyday people and even businesses as a whole partaking in the refreshing challenge, which bought some relief from routine during the lockdown. Around the world, celebrities, students, construction workers, healthcare workers and many others have posted videos of them getting in on the fun challenge.
South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, gave the song his vote of approval as he encouraged all South Africans to perform the dance challenge on Heritage Day, 24th September 2020. Heritage Day is a celebration of the Rainbow Nation’s multiple cultures.
“There can be no better celebration of our South African-ness than joining the global phenomenon that is the Jerusalema dance challenge,” the President said.
Along with the general public, on Heritage Day, hundreds of South African actors and crew members will come together to make a feature film centering on the Jerusalema dance craze that swept the world.
South Africa is known for its rich heritage and vibrant culture, which continues to be proudly celebrated and showcased by South African citizens. In fact, the nation is home to eight of the world's official heritage sites, as determined by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee.
Along with its historically illustrious heritage, the Rainbow Nation is also widely renowned for its song and dance culture, delectable cuisine and indigenous tribes.
