Hearing the word “beach”, most people will see blue water, sand as far as the eye can see, and a bar serving exotic cocktails and grilled shrimp. Not so Veronica Fusaro. With her fine antenna for the nuances of emotions, she takes the beach as the metaphorical starting point for the weather report of a relationship entered, not in the hope of genuine love, but as a sweet distraction from humdrum everyday life.

Continuing with the modus operandi developed for the ‘Sunkissed’ EP (2019), Fusaro recorded Beach as a demo in her studio in Thun, Switzerland. Extra splashes of colour as well as the finishing touches were added in London with Paul O’Duffy. The producer and arranger has worked with Amy Winehouse, Dusty Springfield and many others, including Ian Dury, John Barry and Was (Not Was). “We got on really well from the start,” reports Fusaro. "With the friendship that has since developed in the studio, our mutual understanding has become deeper still."

Beach sees Fusaro heading towards a more organic instrumentation. Lately, too, she has delved into the music of her father’s home country, Italy, especially their idiosyncratic brand of 1950s jazz. In particular she mentions the late big band singer, Fred Buscaglione, and the bittersweet party mood of Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita. “Who knows, maybe a little bit of the spirit of this music has seeped into my new single!”

Beach marks the beginning of a series of singles documenting, like postcards, Fusaro’s journey towards her debut album. Yes, a soul pop album is on its way, full of organic and raw sounds, honest lyrics and vocals that skilfully balance between the depth and playfulness of Veronica Fusaro’s music: pure, powerful and intimate.
