Mubi and Leiter, in association with Plan B Entertainment, are proud to announce Tripping with Nils Frahm, an extraordinary, rare and intimate musical trip that brings a unique concert experience and communal energy to the screen. The new film will release exclusively on the curated streaming service on December 3 in over 190 countries. The live album of the same name will also be released on December 3 by Erased Tapes Records.
When Nils Frahm kicked off his world tour at Funkhaus Berlin in January 2018 to bring his highly acclaimed album ‘All Melody’ to the stage, an ambitious journey was just to begin. Over the next two years, Frahm played over 180 sold-out performances at venues including the Sydney Opera House, LA’s Disney Hall, London’s Barbican, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, and festivals stages around the globe. Yet the setting of Funkhaus Berlin, renowned for its vintage grandeur, outstanding acoustics, and home to Frahm’s studio where ‘All Melody’ was recorded, had held a unique place in the artist's heart.
He returned to Funkhaus Berlin to host another set of four shows, and tickets sold out within hours. His long time collaborator Benoit Toulemonde captured the concerts on film, using only handheld cameras and techniques he had mastered for the acclaimed concert series La Blogotèque.
One of the most exciting sound explorers of our time, the Berlin-based pianist, composer and producer bridges the gap between classical and electronic music. Frahm's unconventional approach to an age-old instrument, along with his eclectic compositions ranging from intimate piano pieces to opulent soundscapes has won him many fans and critical acclaim around the world.
Frahm’s film work includes Victoria, written for the one-take feature film by Sebastian Schipper (winner of the German Film Prize for Best Soundtrack). He also collaborated on the scores of ‘Ellis’, a short film by French artist JR, featuring Robert de Niro, as well as James Gray’s AD ‘Astra’, and Julian Rosefeldt’s ‘Manfesto’.
The film premieres worldwide on December 3, exclusively on the global streaming service.
