The happiest music festival culminated in virtual clinks of Weekender mugs, laughs, goosebumps, and vibes akin to the Weekender state of mind that we’ve all gotten to love so much over the last 11 years.
Never has the term ‘music has no boundaries’ been truer – with the festival being completely sold out, hosting 65,000+ fans across the three days with fans dialling in across Asia experiencing its magic. With a smooth transition from on-ground to digital, the performances were nothing short of mesmerizing, with fans chanting and singing along through every moment of the festival. These were no ordinary run-of-the-mill sets – each and every artist collaborated with the OML team to build entirely unique sets for fans of the festival, from concept, to curation, to performance itself.
Day 0 of the 11th edition of the Bacardi NH7 Weekender was first of its kind for multiple reasons. It featured complimentary access to a state-of-the-art streaming platform built by Paytm Insider, two of India’s most revered musicians who are pioneers of Indian independent scene at the Bacardi Arena, Lucky Ali and Nucleya, and an entire stage dedicated to comedy – AKA the Insider Comedy Stage. Day 0 of the festival opened to over 30,000 fans eagerly awaiting to welcome their favourite music festival back into their calendars, as is an annual custom for most.
Day 1 of the festival (Saturday) saw many spectacular music performances. Australian Grammy-nominated band Hiatus Kaiyote, incorporated an elaborate light installation into their set to create an captivating audio-visual experience. CAS, in keeping with their dramatic, monochrome black and white theme, played an atmospheric set from a dimly-lit room that seemed to take inspiration from classic early 90’s music videos. TabaChake went all out with a hill-top set from Potin, an organic tea estate in Arunachal Pradesh, making for spectacular aerial shots of rolling hills as far as the eye could see. Local bands like Nothing Anonymous, Till Apes and Hashbass also turned in memorable performances.
Day 2 featured beautifully-conceptualised performances from The Lumineers, Shruti Haasan, Lifafa, When Chai Met Toast, Raja Kumari and Prateek Kuhad (the most-streamed Indian indie artist globally), to name a few.
Vivid is the right way to describe Yung Raja’s performance, who aptly performed on the Breezer Vivid Stage. On Day 2, he took us on a journey through Singapore and gave us a sneak-peak into his inspirational life story .
Anuv Jain’s set was laden with personal stories as he described the inspiration behind each song he performed. Gully Gang’s upcoming rap quartet Aavrutti launched their album Naya Zamana with their performance, giving fans a first time preview. Fopchu devised an approach that was decidedly comical in nature. Employing different physical settings, outfits and avatars, the band delivered fantastic banter.
The marquee Insider Comedy Stage served audiences with the best of comedians from across the nation, and witnessed moments that left everyone in splits. The Insider Comedy stage saw laughter-packed live performances with experiential shows like Improv Punchlines and KVizzing along with good ol' stand up comedy by comedians such as Varun Thakur, Abish Mathew, KaneezSurka, Rahul Dua, Prashasti Singh, Amit Tandon, Ashish Shakya, Kenny Sebastian and Vipul Goyal to name a few.
With Bacardi’s ongoing support for the music community in a year that has been especially difficult for artists around the world, the festival hosted over 65,000+ fans across the weekend. It also debuted the entirely new interactive experiential platform built by Paytm Insider to much fanfare by the audience.
With performances that took place across multiple stages, audience members could decide which ones they wanted to watch most, just like an on-ground festival. The digital edition similarly had four stages the Bacardi Arena, the Dewar’s Stage, the Breezer Vivid stage and the Insider Comedy Stage. Not only could audiences toggle between stages, as is customary with the much loved multi-genre music festival on-ground, fans also had a ball video chatting and grooving along to the music on virtual parties, saying hi to the entire audience on the global chat, and watching 15 second clips of fans and artists alike dancing and singing along, on the spotlight stream. The global chat feature narrowed down the boundaries for fans from across the globe who were interacting and supporting their favourite artists, and recorded over 170,000+ messages exchanged across the three days, over 1,100 fans shares spotlight feature videos of themselves enjoying the festival from their homes and over 26,000 private parties were started where fans had the chance to get into a private room with other friends dialling in from different parts of the world. 65,000+ fans spent an average of 108 minutes each stream, consuming 7,000,000+ minutes of festival content over the three days.
Aside from performances, there has been a lot more to be excited about. The festival also marks the first time that its Country Partner, Singapore Tourism Board has partnered with a digital festival. With Yung Raja and Raja Kumari’s sets featuring vibrant locations from the city, we get to experience Singapore through the eyes of the artist.
