The influential rapper was best known for albums ‘Mm. Food’ and ‘Madvillainy’ with Madlib.
MF Doom (1971 - 2020) was a unique rapper and was known for wearing a face mask. This facemask was inspired by the Marvel character Dr. Doom, to which Daniel rechristened himself as MF Doom. He was born on 9th January, 1971 in London and raised on Long Island, N.Y. The son of a Trinidadian mother and a Zimbabwean father, despite his family moving to Long Island, New York when he was a child, Dumile remained a British citizen for the rest of his life.
Dumile first rapped under the alias Zev Love X with the group KMD in the late '80s. The group released two albums: 1991's ‘Mr. Hood’ and ‘Black Bastards’, which was completed in 1993 but was not released until 2001.
In an interview he is reportedly stated that the mask was just another character of himself. “I decided the mask would just add to the mystique of the character as well as make DOOM stand out. I thought it'd be an easy way for people to see and differentiate between characters, sort like when an actor gains weight for a role.”
Doom was undoubtedly one of the greatest artists of our generation and it feels surreal to say that he isn’t with us anymore. We’re sure we speak for many of us when we say Doom introduced us to a whole new world of hip-hop and he earned the title of “Your favorite rappers’ favorite rapper” because he pioneered modern hip hop culture in such a unique and important way it couldn’t have been replicated by anyone else. Rest in peace to Madvillian, Metal Face, Viktor Vaughn, JJ Doom, DANGERDOOM, KMD, King Geedorah, MF DOOM, and most of all Daniel Dumile who died as he lived, a Legend. Elusive, enigmatic and immensely talented.
MF Doom hadn't released a solo album since 2009's ‘Born Like This’.
