Village Boy is the newest music video by South West Sydney hip hop artist/producer, L- Fresh The Lion.
Directed by Teggy (East Side Flow, Russian Tank by Sidhu Moose Wala) the video was shot in the Punjab village of Bhagwanpur, which is home to farmers whose livelihoods depend on the produce of the village. The music video celebrates communities of the farmers and their children who have great pride in their culture and their way of life, the togetherness they share in being with one another and their undying positive spirit.
Village Boy is a story of being proud of where you come from. The lyrics speak of L- Fresh The Lion. L- Fresh The Lion’s own upbringing, subverting the often negative perceptions people have of Western Sydney with bars highlighting the area’s strength & resilience.
‘They talk about the West like we’re dumb, deaf & blind, But we’re schooled by the struggle so my people extra wise, Heavy lifters, we treat trouble like it’s exercise, Yeah I take my city with me, it never gets left behind’.
Reflecting on his past, L- Fresh The Lion, being Australian, knows exactly where his roots close by). They taught him to embrace the same energy & spirit from the village to break through life’s barriers.
The location, lyrics, what it means to the artist and the timing of this release is what makes this even more special due to the fact that the villagers' way of life is under threat, like all farming villages across India. This video is a literal time capsule celebrating the farming.
“Village Boy is one of my favourites from the SOUTH WEST record. I wanted to draw some parallels between the village life that shaped my parents & the values I learnt growing up in Western Sydney. With the video, I wanted to create something that would make people feel the same joy and love I have for Punjab”, says L- Fresh The Lion.
“When I heard the track Village Boy I knew I had to be the man that creates the video. Having the opportunity to go back to Punjab with Lfresh the Lion and showcase a small taste of our humble beginnings was a very special and unforgettable experience. We brought hiphop to the village and we are gonna bring the village to your screens” says director Teg.
L- Fresh The Lion burst on to the scene a decade ago, supporting Nas’s first headline tour of Australia, however, it wasn’t until 2019 that the Australian-Punjabi rapper started getting noticed in India. On the back of two guest appearances on India’s only national Rap Show - JBL’s MTV Hustle and a collaboration with EPR Iyer and The Shloka, L- Fresh The Lion’s body of work deeply resonates with his Punjabi roots and speaks powerfully on socio-political issues across the country.
