Irish singing star Sinéad O'Connor passes away

The music world mourns the passing away of singer Sinéad O'Connor, best known for her heartrending cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U. Connor died at the age of 56. The Irish songstress born in Dublin cause of death was not revealed.

However a statement issued by the family said, "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad, Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time”.

O'Connor had been open about her struggle with mental illness throughout her career. Just recently, she shared on Facebook that she had moved back to London after 23 years and was working on an album set to be released next year. She also had plans for tours across various continents in the coming years.

Her early life was marked by difficulties, having endured a difficult childhood after her parents' separation and facing abuse from her mother. Despite the hardships, O'Connor discovered her musical talent at an early age, leading her to pursue a career in music.

Her breakthrough came with the release of her debut album, "The Lion and the Cobra," which earned her a Grammy nomination. However, it was her second album, "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got," that catapulted her to international fame. Her rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U topped charts worldwide and earned her a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance.

In her personal life, O'Connor faced her share of ups and downs, experiencing tumultuous relationships and marriages. Tragically, she lost her son Shane last January.

O'Connor announced in 2018 that she had converted to Islam and would be adopting the name Shuhada' Davitt, later Shuhada Sadaqat, although she continued to use Sinéad O'Connor professionally in her music career.

O'Connor is survived by three of her children.
