6 Feet Down is the new single from South-London musician Tara Lily, in collaboration with American jazz trumpeter Theo Croker. It is the first taste of new music from the rising star on her new label Tru Thoughts, and follows the release of Double Time, a track that combined, R&B, Jazz, drum ‘n’ bass and traditional Indian sounds into a unique fusion.
6 Feet Down sees the classically trained jazz musician go back to her roots, while expanding on the darker lyricism explored in her previous work. “It’s about finding your way out of the deep, dark place of sadness”, Tara explains.
The song is laced with late-night melancholy and dubbed-out instrumentation, as wavy Rhodes keys and Theo Croker’s signature trumpet float through the air, in symbiosis with Tara’s spectral vocals, creating a sombre soundscape.
Trumpeter Theo Croker is an adventurous jazz musician known for his cosmically minded, spiritually enlightened take on post-bop, funk, and electronic-tinged fusion – boasting GRAMMY nominations, Tara Lily first met Theo Croker him at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, and last year was invited to open for him at The Jazz Cafe.
Both Double Time and 6 Feet Down feat. Theo Croker add to Tara’s catalogue of distinctive music that marries the sonic terrains of the East and West, and has amassed support from The Guardian, The Face, Clash, Time Out and Evening Standard and many more with playlisting on BBC Radio 1, BBC Asian Network, plays on BBC 6Music, Jazz FM and spot plays by Greg James, Jack Saunders (BBC Radio 1) and Jamz Supernova (Selector Radio).
Growing up in south London with a strong connection to her British Bengali heritage has given Tara Lily a unique perspective on music and global culture. She has spent her life absorbing a multitude of sounds and genres from her surroundings, ranging from alternative R&B and jazz to Indian classical and electronica. It was this intriguing blend of sounds and her deep understanding of the worlds they come from which caught the attention of the likes of Virgil Abloh, Gilles Peterson, Iggy Pop, Jamie Cullum and Motown Records UK, who signed Tara as their first British artist.
A formidable talent who celebrates strength and power in her music, 6 Feet Down feat. Theo Croker’ marks the start of this new chapter for the rising talent who is set to release a brand new project next year on her new label Tru Thoughts, to follow up her acclaimed EPs ‘Last Flight Out’ and ‘Lost in London’.
