1D, Katy Perry, Iggy Azalea, Sam Smith win big at 42 American Music Awards

Some of the greatest names in music entertainment took to the stage to celebrate the 42nd Edition of the American Music Awards. The 2014 AMAs rewarded popular musicians across all genres -- including alternative, country, rhythm and blues, rock and others by giving fans the opportunity to votefor whom they believe should win.

British boys One Direction won artist of the year at the American Music Awards, taking home three honors and was the night's big winner next to Katy Perry, who didn't attend the show.

One Direction also won favorite band, duo or group — pop/rock and favorite album — pop/rock for "Midnight Memories" at the fan-voted show.

The 42nd annual edition of these music awards was hosted by rapper Pitbull and it was raptress Iggy Azalea who had the most nominations: 6. In AMAs fashion, the performers list was long; very long. There were 18 performances in total with some featuring many artists on stage.

A few of the most important performers on this year’s AMAs were: Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lopez, One Direction, Iggy Azalea, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Selena Gomez and Fergie.

It was good to see The Black Eyed Peas frontwoman Fergie perform her brand new single L.A Love for the first time ever LIVE and on television, and Selena Gomez did the same with her new track Heart want what it Wants.

The American Music Awards were held on Sunday night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
