There could be no better occasion than Republic Day to do a special reworking of the anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’. The song ‘Jaya Hey’ in its first edition was launched to commemorate 150 years of Gurudev Rabindranath’s Tagore’s birth anniversary and the response was just overwhelming. With recent developments in our political and economic landscape, where India is rediscovering its soul, the new version will take you for a walk down the memory lane to the moment that defined us as a nation.
India is a country of many countries. Culture and diversity runs in our blood and this song, ‘our national anthem’ captures this essence beautifully. Through our national anthem “Jana Gana Mana”, Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore articulated his philosophy of universal brotherhood and love in five verses written in the praise of our great nation. But what we know as our National Anthem; "Jana Gana Mana", is just the first of five stanzas of a Brahmo hymn composed and scored by Rabindranath Tagore. The same was officially adopted by the Constituent Assembly as the Indian national anthem on 24 January 1950. The rest 4 verses were more or less remained undiscovered by the common man.
‘Jaya Hey’ features 39 of the most celebrated Indian artists. It portrays the splendor and magnitude of our country invoking a fierce surge of national pride amongst us. The verses have also been translated into English for ease of understanding, creating a universal appeal.
In this song, the music directors, Sourendro Mullick and Soumyojit Das have experimented with musical genres like Blues, Jazz, Folk, etc. enabling one to connect with people from across borders and all walks of life. Some of India’s best musicians and singers came together for the first time to create this masterpiece; Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pandit Vishwamohan Bhatt, Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Sunidhi Chauhan, Kailash Kher, P. Susheela, Jagjit Singh, Shankar Mahadevan to name just a few.
