21st June has been designated as World Music Day, a day the world celebrates the magical gift of music. It’s origins lie in France when, in 1976, American musician Joel Cohen, proposed an all-night music celebration to mark the beginning of the summer solstice and since then, it has become a worldwide phenomenon. But another theory claims that the day began in France in 1982 when French Minister of Culture Jack Lang conceived the idea in 1981 in Paris. Since then the day has been celebrated every year as the World Music Day. Many countries worldwide have their own celebrations in their own way, regardless of the season. The central idea behind the day is to make all concerts and music events free to the public.
The event has quickly caught on so much so that it is now celebrated across 514 cities in 104 countries around the world. Not just the artistes and labels, but radio stations, music channels and sites have also joined in the celebrations. Well for India it is the monsoon season and nowhere can open air music events be held. But there are a few closed venues that play host to World Music Day.
This 21st June, the Sofitel at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex, will host a special evening of unique live performances in three of their restaurants, namely Pondicherry Café, Tsukers and Jyran. The Pondicherry Café will resonate to some European and Indian music played by some contemporary musicians, while at Tsukers relax with a stellar selection of folk with Rajasthani folk music. Jyran promises some unforgettable Ghazals.
Add to that a special musically themed menu to add to the music festive. Take your pick
