Box sets and limited editions, have always had a special space in the hearts of music aficionados. Now that the Indie scene in the country has warmed up to strong non-mainstream sounds, it’s only apt for Indie artists to add a special touch in their gratitude for unflinching support.
With this intention and Coshish drummer Hamza Kazi’s teen-years’ fixation for bonus material and special fare, Mukti –Coshish’s limited edition DVD box set came into being.
The Mumbai-based band that fuses elements of Progressive Rock, with mainstream song writing of Hindi Rock, has always strived towards creating a mass appeal for their music, while showcasing their musical dexterity. Alongside, as a band they are also determined to well cover all aspects music-making with a difference, be it their cover art, pictures, live act or musical concepts, videos or merchandise, something which they take forward with the release of these limited edition box sets.
Their debut Firdous (also a Universal release), received positive reviews for the music and production as well as the unique artwork and packaging. Their Firdous tee for example has been one of the highest selling band t-shirt on a e commerce website, with more than 400 units sold worldwide. The album conveyed the story of a man who takes a journey to attain nirvana. The albums artwork carried hints that once solved lead to an alternate mode of listening to the album.
Mukti- the DVD box set too, has been welcomed with an encouraging amount of pre-orders.
“We are extremely pleased to support Coshish in their heartfelt effort to walk the extra mile for their fans. They are a spirited lot of musicians, who are always trying to push the envelope musically and otherwise. The DVD box is one such step, where they are meet their fans half way, to say thanks and further fuel sense of belonging that the Indie fans and Indie bands share”says Devraj Sanyal, Managing Director and CEO, Universal Music Group South Asia.
“We are blessed with some faithful fans and this DVD is a medium to strengthen our relationship with them. It’s our way of telling them that we know they’re out there and it means a great deal to have their supports”, says Singer/song-writer Mangesh Gandhi.
“Coshish doesn’t play commercial music because of which there are a lot of constraints that we have to work with. However, we overcome them with the help from our fans. We were really touched when a lot of people messaged us saying that “Firdous” was the first album they had ever bought! We hope the same happens with the DVD,” says guitar player Shrikant Sreenivasan.
"We were always fascinated by boxsets put out by bands like Tool, Porcupine Tree, A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, to name a few. They weren't just DVDs or CDs you owned but more like pieces of art that you were proud to hold in your hands. We wanted our fans to experience that same feeling. Because of the overwhelming response we got for our album, which sold over 2,000 physical copies, we thought it would be a good idea to do a limited run of a very special package, for our hardcore fans. We know that in India, nobody does this but we want to set a trend of giving the fans more than just music. Something tangible and meaningful. Our boxset is priced at 1/10th or 1/15th the price of international counterparts and we think it's a fair deal for people who like us. We're quite positive that we'll sell them out soon." says drummer Hamza Kazi.
