Four-time Grammy®-nominated Anoushka Shankar, “one of the greatest sitar players in the world” (Rolling Stone), presents Home: a pure Indian classical album that showcases the meditative and virtuosic qualities of the Indian raga. Home released on Universal Music India on 10th July, 2015.
After several stunning experimental/crossover albums, including the Grammy®-nominated recordings Rise, Traveller and Traces Of You, Anoushka returns to her classical roots, paying homage to the teachings of her father and guru Ravi Shankar. Home features two ragas, one of which is a creation of Ravi Shankar’s, and with them Anoushka shares an intimate, heartfelt live performance in the traditional style. Indian classical music is not written down, but has been improvised and passed down through an oral tradition for centuries; Home is a paradigm of this genre, exemplifying the unique dichotomy between the ancient structure and in-the-moment improvisations. Home is self-produced by Anoushka, and on it she strove torecord the ancient instruments at an unprecedented, “high-definition” quality, working with a team of experts to design a studio in her own home that would be uniquely suited to the timbre of her instrument.
A beautifully penned treatise on Indian classical music written by Ravi Shankar in 1965 accompanies the album. He says of this music, “a raga is the projection of the artist’s inner spirit, a manifestation of his most profound sentiments and sensibilities brought forth through tones and melodies. The musician must breathe life into each raga as he unfolds and expands it.”
With Home, Anoushka continues her journey exploring modern and fresh ways to reinterpret and keep alive the beautiful musical traditions of India.
Home is Anoushka’s third release on Deutsche Grammophon. Anoushka’s previous albums on the Yellow Label, Traveller and Traces of You (the latter recorded with her half-sister Norah Jones), were both nominated for Grammy® Awards.
As part of her Tour, the gorgeous international Sitarist is expected to visit India at the end of December 2015
The album Home is available exclusively on Universal Music on both physical and digital formats.
