If you thought only Bosco – Caesar, Terence Lewis, Saroj Khan could get you to shake a leg, check out upcoming choreographer Shampa Gopikrishna who is out to give some stiff competition to her competitors.
Born in a family of legendary Kathak dancers, Shampa Gopikrishna gave her first Kathak recital at the tender age of 4, playing young Meerabai in her Father’s production Meera. Trained in Kathak, Bharatanatyam and Odissi as a young child, she stopped dancing for a few years after her parents passed away, leaving behind a legacy she didn’t feel she could carry on. Under her tenure with the TLCDC she has danced in and co-choreographed many big shows as well as assisted and choreographed many acts for Dance India Dance Season 1 and 2 (Zee TV)and Nachle Ve with Saroj and Terence (Imagine TV). She has also taught and trained many actors like Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Urmila Matondkar, Dia Mirza, Jacqueline Fernandes, Malaika Arora Khan, Yana Gupta, Gauhar Khan and Rashmi Desai.
Shampa got her big break when she featured as a choreographer in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4 where she partnered with Sushant Singh Rajput. Sushant and she together took the show to another level with their perfect chemistry, her superb concepts and choreography and amazing dancing. She was titled the IT and PERFECT choreographer by judges Remo D’souza and Madhuri Dixit and she proved it when she won Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5 this time with her partner TV actor Gurmeet Choudhary. She was also nominated in the category of Best Choreographer by the Indian Telly Awards in 2012 for her superior work. Since then she has been working as an independent performer and choreographer and recently co-choreographed the song Ang laga de for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ramleela featuring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh. She has also independently choreographed acts for Dance India Dance Season 3, Nach Baliye Season 6 and Nach le Ve Season 3. She hasalso trained children and choreographed for a fiction show called Shake it up Mumbai (Disney).
With such an impressive record, Shampa is surely to go places and is a choreographer to watch out for in 2014.
