Goa reverberates to the sound of EDM at Supersonic Festival

The sands of Candolim went Supersonic for the first time on 26th December as a host of India and the world's finest DJs gave birth to Goa's newest EDM Festival: Vh1 Supersonic.

The inaugural 5 day (26th December 2013 – 30th December 2013) festival saw two exhilarating stages -- the massive Laboratoire Supersonique and the brilliant, LED-packed Spectrum -- give music fans two completely unique, individual experiences within the overall festival.

The Laboratoire Supersonique stage was highlighted by Goldfish + Blink's energetic, mashup filled set, Henrik B's brand of banging Swedish house music, and Alvaro's big-room beats. Alvaro's set in particular reminded festivalgoers why Tiesto handpicked the young Dutchman as the standout DJ/producer of 2013.

Over on the Spectrum stage, immersive visuals gave Supersonic fans the perfect optical complement to the rhythmic psy-trance, progressive, and trance pulsing through oceanside air. Two of India's finest acts, Helium Project and Audiogramme, reminded the grooving crowd why the country's psychedelic trance scene is arguably the finest in the world. Pulse and Tristan then took the energy to new, explosive heights by giving crowd the euphoric reward it had been waiting for.

It was an exciting beginning to a brand-new chapter in Goa's long EDM history, a festival that once again brings a sense of community and togetherness to the fore.

Day 2 of Vh1 Supersonic restored the spirit of community to Goa's EDM landscape, bringing together music lovers of all colors, shapes, and sizes to celebrate the peace, love, unity, and respect that defines dance music.

Stellar sets from a number of different dance genres pulsed through Candolim Beach for nine unforgettable hours, beginning in the afternoon at 1:00pm and ending at 10:00pm with spectacular performances by India's bass music icon Vachan Chinnappa, electronica pioneers Midival Punditz, and progressive trance superstars Max Graham & Protoculture. The world's finest electronic artists performed alongside their Indian counterparts to give Goa's music fans the spiritual music experience they've been craving.

Trance, drum and bass, house, techno, was all there, unifying the crowds that gathered on Candolim to celebrate dance music and the unique unifying feeling it creates. Standout sets included , Sanjay Dutta’s inescapable demonstration of why he's considered the Godfather of Indian dance music, and Norman Doray's signature electro assault. The energy was indescribable, and the audience welcomed the euphoria provided by fantastic music in a beachside setting. But the day wasn't without its hiccups, Sander Kleinenberg's classic house music showcase was delayed because the Dutchman had missed his scheduled flight from the Netherlands. Sander drove directly to Vh1 Supersonic from the airport, hopped on stage to perform, then jumped right back into the car and drove directly back to the airport to return to his homeland. He was here for one reason, to rock the crowd that had assembled at Vh1 Supersonic - and though his time in India was brief, it was immensely enjoyable.

Grooving throngs of over 8,000 people danced together on the Goan sands on Day 2 of Vh1 Supersonic.

The crowds were back on Day 3 to lose themselves under the Candolim sky as the festival kicked into higher gear on 28th December. Festival goers were unified and inspired by the uplifting melodies and irresistible beats flowing through Candolim's milky sands. It was a poignant reminder of dance music's incredible power to bring people together and build a community out of erstwhile strangers.

Ferry Corsten's extended 2.5 hour performance highlighted Day 3, but there were plenty of other magical moments throughout the day. The star-studded lineup captivated the 8,000-strong audience, with Jerome Isma-Ae, BT, and John 00 Fleming reminding the assembled throngs why they have become three of the most beloved artists to ever perform on Indian shores.

This was beautiful music that weaved together trance, progressive, and everything in between -- a treat for the ears accompanied by the soothing murmur of Goan waves and the most intense visual spectacle ever witnessed on Candolim beach. Airwave's set will also live long in the memory-- the Belgian's performance filled every heart that witnessed it, resulting in plenty of broad smiles, outstretched arms, and happy embraces.

An eclectic assortment of India's own artists also provided their own bits of magic -- Bangalore's Shash and Chaz showing why they're among that city's best-known acts, newcomers Aditya + Jay showing glimpses of their talent, Pramod Sippy and Mash expertly soundtracking the beachside vibe, and Ma Faiza proving once again why she's become an Indian electronica legend.

The 4th day and last day saw this musical celebration called Vh1 Supersonic become more than just a music festival. It's now a movement -- a new, historic moment in Goa's long and beautiful dance music story. This is about more than artists, tracks, and music. This is about that indescribable, magical feeling created by thousands of open-hearted, like-minded music lovers coming together to dance on Candolim's beautiful beach.

Legendary British DJ Yousef made his debut Indian performance in the afternoon, enthralling the grooving crowd with his signature brand of what he calls "21st century house music". It was simple, sensual, rhythmic and powerful. The intense visuals provided by Bangalore-based VJ KayCee perfectly complimented Yousef's set. KayCee also set the tone for Booka Shade's live tech house showcase and Tuhin Mehta's energetic, driving end to the day's proceedings.

Meanwhile, electro icon Benny Benassi also rocked an Indian crowd for the first time, showing fans why he's one of the most beloved and influential DJs of the past 10 year. Earlier, Funkagenda and Felix Cartal had given the buzzing crowds the burst of energy they'd been craving.

The 5th and and final day of Vh1 Supersonic ended with plenty of smiles, heartfelt emotions, and just a few tears. Tony McGuinness of the mighty Above & Beyond concluded these five magical days on Candolim's beautiful sands the only way he knew how -- with classic tunes that unified all of the assembled music lovers for a bit of Group Therapy.

No dance music act can match Above & Beyond's intensely spiritual performances, and McGuiness' performance was a fitting end to a festival that has been about bringing people together to celebrate dance music's unmatched power. For five unprecedented days, Goa has witnessed a unique festival that has returned the spirit of community to the Indian dance music scene.

The last five days have brought the values of Peace Love Unity and Respect (P.L.U.R) to the forefront of dance music.  The first ever Vh1 Supersonic unfurled over the sands of Candolim Beach bringing fans from India and around the world a spectacle that spread over the three stages: the main stage Sub Sonica, the leviathan Spectrum and the edgy Labratoire Supersonique.  All three combined the best artists both international and local, beautiful visuals and seamless production. A little known fact was that it was all put together in just three weeks. Conceptualized by Live Viacom 18 and Nikhil Chinapa, the festival took on their shared ideals: friends and family. It’s the dance music community within India and the world that is the driving force behind everything within the realm of electronica.  Super Location, Super Lineup and Super You was Vh1 Supersonic’s slogan, as it aimed to shine a spotlight on those very important tenets.  The euphoric faces dotted along the sands in thousands, revealed that it was a successful endeavor.
