Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran win big at the European Music Awards

Over 500 million votes were cast, and on 25th October, the winners of this year’s 22nd Annual MTV EMAs (Europe Music Awards) were revealed at an all-star ceremony in Mediolanum Forum in Milan, Italy. Justin Bieber was the big winner of the night, taking home five trophies. Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis also had their share of success, with the latter winning the coveted Best Video. 80s heartthrobs Duran Duran who have made a comeback was awarded the first ever Video Visionary Award for band’s innovative music videos when MTV first launched, putting them back into the spotlight of new fans who are tuning into them.

The musical evening was hosted by Ed Sheeran and model and actress Ruby Rose. The event also saw a galaxy of live performances by such artists as justin Bieber, Ellie Goulding, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Pharrell and many others. The EMAs honour the best music from around the world with categories including Best Song, Best Pop, Best Rock, Best Hip Hop, Best Male and Best Female singers among many others.

American country turned pop singer Taylor Swift, who lead the nominations list with nine nominations, surprised many by only taking home one award for Best Song. The singer cleaned up at the MTV Video Music Awards (America’s equivalent) just a few months ago, and a repeat was expected.

Canadian singer Justin Bieber won the Best Male at the EMAs for the sixth year in a row. The 21-year-old singer rocked the stage with a memorable performance with his new song 'What Do You Mean?'. Ellie Goulding gave a stunning performance of her super hit Love me like you do atop a diamond podium on stage.

Bieber ruled the night winning five awards at the ceremony. Justin Bieber accepts the award for Best Collaboration.

Though the EMAs are based in Europe every year (they were held in Milan this year, and will be in Rotterdam in 2016), they celebrate music from all corners of the globe. The show has specific categories for every continent, where fans can support their country’s biggest stars that might not be well known elsewhere in the world.
