Crossword Bookstores recently hosted the book launch of Om Books International’s Mohammed Rafi - Golden Voice Of The Silver Screen, the only authorized biography of of one of India’s most beloved singers penned by Sujata Dev at their Kemps Corner outlet today.The guest of honor at the event included the legendary singer’s son Shahid Rafi who interacted with the author and spoke to the audience present about the book and the memories of the celebrated singer.
Brimming with nostalgia, the book was launched on the occasion of Mohammed Rafi's 91st birth anniversary and features interesting anecdotes and stories about one of India’s greatest musicians of all times.
Born in 1924 at Kotla Sultan Singh, a village near Amritsar, Mohammed Rafi, nicknamed ‘Pheeko’, was the second youngest of Hajji Ali Mohammed and Allah Rakhi’s six sons. He started singing early, deeply inspired by the songs of a wandering fakir, in the village. In the 1920s, circumstances compelled Rafi’s father to move to Lahore where he opened a small dhaba. Rafi’s elder brother, Mohammed Deen, started a barber shop in Noor Mohalla, Bhatti Gate in the same city, withRafi lending him a helping hand. Meanwhile, Mohammed Deen’s friend, Abdul Hameed recognised Rafi’s talent and encouraged him to sing. Later, he convinced the reluctant family to allow him to take Rafi to Bombay. In 1944, the two arrived in an alien city from where Mohammed Rafi slowly won over the heart of an entire nation.
Sujata Dev is passionate about Indian and Western music and has been a fan of Mohammed Rafi since her childhood. Mohammed Rafi: Voice of a Nation is her tribute to the legendary playback singer whose songs have marked our growing-up years.
