One of the world’s biggest electronic music festival festival came to life at Vagator with thousands of dance music enthusiasts from across 50 countries getting enthralled by electronic dance music powerhouses. The 200 feet plus Main Stage, titled ‘Empire Of The Sun’ draws its inspiration from Indian ethnicity with the cranium of Ashoka taking centre stage on a chariot, heralding the 10th year anniversary of the dance music brand.
Sunburn’s 4 day madness returned for the 9th time, from the 27th to the 30th December, with more madness, more music and more memories to make. The morning on the very first day of this fiesta with thousands of people from all over the world coming together to celebrate the movement electronic dance music has created world over. While the food courts, adventure sports, flea market and exotics bars were packed with party goers, on-site camping- a first time concept in India turned out to be a special experience all of its own. Campers were positioned atop the hills and got a panoramic view of the hysteria of epic proportions that gripped 500,000sq/m.
Day 1 saw Sam Feldt on the Main Stage, playing an amazing collection of refreshing deep house songs and warm tropical house hits. The audience went delirious as he broke out on of his most popular singles, Show Me Love. Dyro, Nucleya, Paji, Paperqueen and Juliet Sikora set fire to Sunburn with their revolutionary beats and high-octane energy. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike are a Belgian DJ duo composed of brothers Dimitri Thivaios and Michael Thivaios currently the #1 spot on DJ Magazine's annual Top 100 DJs poll played their world famous hits like Waves, Wakanda and Mammoth and an electrifying high energy set of the ultimate dance music anthems.
Day 2 stepped up a notch with an all time-high energy. With Goa’s very own darling Anish Sood taking over the Main Stage while somewhere in the distance, Avantika Bakshi owned it at the Techno Stage. Avantika played deep house, tech-house, deep techno, nu-disco & indie dance coupled with Sunburn’s fabulous and eclectic foray of special effects – “breath taking” doesn’t cover this experience. Sam Feldt returned for day 2 - setting Cubezoid ablaze with his tropical beats for Goa’s cold winter nights. Southwild the trance ace also hit the Psy Stage with an arsenal of progressive hard-hitters to an ecstatic crowd at the Analog stage. The second day of Sunburn also featured the Norwegian DJ and record producer Kygo who came to India for the very first time. The deep house, downtempo hit maker played his #1 hit Firestone and Habits. It was an overwhelming sight to watch thousands of people chant the lyrics and dance their cares away to tropical house beats. Audiences went in a frenzy when he threw in some Punjabi numbers and a remix of Aao Raja from ‘Gabbar Is Back’.
Other artists like Blurry Slur, Bassjackers, Echofloat and Candice Redding kept the music and merriment going on, the Sunburn style..
Day 3 kickstarted with Mumbai’s underground artist Ankur Sood followed by Nucleya and Cubezoid. The audience was almost wrapped in a haze of techno and high energy progressive as Nucleya performed bass heavy electronica anthems like Akkad Bakkad mixing south Indian folk music with rad western beats. The headliner for day 3, Dutch DJ Martin Garrix took over Main Stage. The 19-year-old music revolutionary once again proved his worth with hits like Animals leaving the audience in frenzy. The fans stomped and raised hands and made the trademark dance music sign of heart shape for Martin including putting all their camera lights on at one go for him. The night ended with a beautiful mix of Adele’s Hello and a warm shukriya to all his fans. The others on the line-up included Aly & Fila, Bassjackers, Aneyelator, Nelio, DJ Dee, Squidworks, Clement, Seth Troxler ensuring another brilliant day full of high spirits and high energy at the Sunbun arena.
Day 4 and also the last day, one day short of the New Year, started with Shaan and Friends playing noon onwards at Cubezoid. Shashank, Folic State, Back to Mars and Nitin took over the line up on all 5 stages of Sunburn arena. Russian beauty and Hindi film actress, Julia Bliss set the pace with her complex drum beats and percussion sounds with KSHMR throwing in some electro progressive house and big room bass with some Kajra Re from ‘Bunty Aur Babli’. Adding to the madness of Sunburn - the highlight of the event was French DJ, record producer David Guetta, a much loved figure in India who has attended Sunburn for the 4th time. The long locked DJ delivered one of his most diverse sets. Covering classics like Titanium, Sexy Bitch to which the audience chanted religiously, progressing on to his more recent hits like Hey Mama and Lovers On the Sun. The high octane night ended with the much acclaimed producer proclaiming his love for Indian fans and how India is the temple of dance music.
Ushering in the post festival madness were the after parties at the craziest clubs in town. Headhunterz, MATTN, Kash Trivedi, Moti x Lucas & Steve, Rohan Kapoor, Aerreo vs NDS, Aly & Fila, Sidney Samson, Justin Mylo, Brian Cross x Shaan, Zenith and Candice Redding at club NYXE; Trevor Moontribe, XP VOODOO, Priyanjana, Deser Dwellers, LABRATS, RELATIVE, Boombaba, Back to Mars, Aphid Moon at Hilltop; Tube & Berger & Paji, Tara Mobayen, Avantika Bakshi, Art Department, Sequ3l x Qwiver, Joshi, Seth Troxler, Swami Harami, Oozeundat, Cid inc and COALITION at Marbella; Christ Burstein, Manu Ferrantini, Nephra, Juliet Sikora, Jade x Maher Daniel, Arsh x Folic State and Orbs & Zen at Antaris cocooned the speculator journey with their heavy-hitting sets.
The ninth year of Sunburn Goa was memorable, musical and magical. The artist village reverberated by all sorts of bass-lines buoyed by the incessant energy of a crowd that was nothing but love, excitement and positivity. The animated flea markets, multiple adventure sports and lip smacking gastronomical delights added to the mega celebrations that dive into the anniversary year of the brand.
