Delhi 2 Dublin, the international electronic pop bhangra fusion band recently launched the official music video of We're All Desi from their album of the same name, shot with the local cast and crew in Dharavi slum in Mumbai, the largest slum in Asia. The band had recently visited the Mumbai for a music tour and decided to change the way how people portray life in the slums by adding a realistic yet filmy touch to it.
The story of 5 Bantas (slang for ‘cool dude’) keeping it real in the slums of Dharavi is narrated by Delhi 2 Dublin as Jai, Veeru and the Gabbar gang straight out of the iconic film Sholay. The video features Siddhesh, Yogesh, Alex, David & Durgesh – kids that were playing and hanging around in the Dharavi area when the director and his crew went there for a location recce. This video is another glowing example of how much untapped talent resides in Dharavi.
The video “We’re All Desi” is shot by Kedar Sonigra with a local cast and crew from the Dharavi slum in Mumbai. Based on their own experiences visiting the area on the recent tour of India, D2D were moved to provide a new narrative - something more ‘real’ than Major Lazer’s Lean On or Coldplay’s Hymn for the Weekend and they wanted to confront people’s stereotypes of slums - to show them as living neighborhoods with normal people living full lives - not as exotic wallpaper for rockstars, or as poverty porn. Kedar built a story using some classic Bollywood themes, told in a new light through the lives of 5 young bantas (Mumbai slum slang for ‘cool dudes’) keeping it real in Dharavi.
We’re All Desi is the latest studio album from Delhi2Dublin, a Canadian world music group from Vancouver who play a fusion of Bhangra, Electronic, Funk, Dub Reggae, Hip Hop & Celtic music. Inspired by their favorite Bollywood records of the 70s and their love of bass music, the much acclaimed live electronic act’s latest offering is a mash up of electronic & acoustic, of East and West, and of great production and clinical song writing…with a lot more bass! Songs like TumbiWOW, Voodoo Selekta & Low n Slow have bhangra elements mixed with a heavy dose of funk – the signature D2D sound.
