The IMI [The Indian Music Industry] representing the recording industry of the country and affiliated to IFPI [International Federation of the Phonographic Industry] welcomes India’s recently announced National IPR Policy and is encouraged by the statement of Mrs. Nirmala Sitaraman, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Commerce & Industry who said , “We have to stop this (piracy) as it tarnishes the image of our country and many music producers and artists are unable to protect their content. Now we want to give them better protection of their IPR”.
India is one of the the largest creator of Music in the World but the greatest impediment to the growth of the Indian Music industry, has been and still is, the significantly high level of music piracy ..
IMI welcomes the Governments understanding that India’s creative economy requires effective IP protection and look forward to the National IPR Policy to stimulate and evolve a strong protective mechanism which could help incentivise substantial investments in creativity and innovation.
IMI, at a high resource cost , has been in the forefront of the country’s IPR businesses in their fight against piracy. This has largely contributed in sustaining a legitimate Music Industry in INDIA unlike our neighbours Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh who have totally lost their legit music business to pirates.
The National IPR Policy has the visionary tagline of "Creative India : Innovative India”.
Said Shridhar Subramaniam President India & Middle East, SONY Music and Chairman IMI, “We are pleased with our National IPR policy and are committed to actively and effectively support the Governments endeavour in its implementation”.
IMI expresses its gratefulness to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) - Government of India , for this far reaching policy for the protection of IPR.
