Milan is an endeavour of Banyan Tree which features internationally acclaimed maestros on the same platform. Last three years Milan has featured ace pianist Richard Clayderman in an exclusive combination with Rahul Sharma; the other editions featured renowned saxophonist Buddy Wells and Kanjira player Selva Ganesh combining with Rahul Sharma yet again.
The fourth edition is equally unique. It has a new format. Unlike in the past, this year Milan will feature two segments. First, a vibrant rhythmic dialogue aptly titled, ‘Globol Taal’ and second, a coming together of two internationally acclaimed brilliant artists titled ‘East meets west’.
East meets West is a one of its kind presentation featuring maestros from East and West. This combination of elegant melodies will definitely be a scintillating performance that will enthral the music lovers of Mumbai.
Rahul Sharma (Santoor) with his band of accomplished musicians embodies the perfect example of the new Indian musician – equally at ease in the world of pure classical and indo-western fusion music alike. .Son and disciple of the living legend Pt Shivkumar Sharma, Rahul has successfully created bestselling albums combining his Santoor with the likes of Kenny G, the global saxophone icon, and of course Confluence, his album with Richard Clayderman continues to top the charts till date. He is a performer, composer par excellence with a huge fan following at such a young age.
He plays with George Brooks - The Master Saxophonist who is hailed as the “leading American voice in Indian jazz fusion”. George Brooks, who is also a composer, is a prolific and diverse saxophonist and composer. Acclaimed for successfully bridging the worlds of jazz and Indian classical music, with his original compositions combine elegant melodies with the rich harmonies of modern jazz and the driving rhythms of North India, forming a unique and wholly satisfying musical experience. It would be interesting to watch to music stalwarts on one stage, one on santoor and the other on the sax.
If you are looking for the best in percussion, Globol Taal is a never before presentation consisting of two maestros together in a vibrant rhythmic dialog. Featuring Pete Lockett who is one of the most versatile multi-percussionists in the world who has immersed himself in percussion and drums from every part of the globe, from Indian to Arabic and from Japanese to Latin, makes his footprint on Milan. Lockett gained an interest in music at the age of 19 and found a career in music (especially in percussion).
Lockett will be joined on stage with Phil Maturano who plays western drums and is a renowned, ace drummer from New York. Maturano was raised in a family of musicians and was drawn to the drums at an early age. His exposure at that time to the great artists of jazz helped to develop his great passion for the music. When he was 16 he began his first serious study, with jazz drumming great – Roy Mc Curdy. Under Roy’s “wing” he learned the language and art of jazz drumming.
Needless to add, this jugalbandi promises to be among the most sought after event of the year and is sure to enthral the music lovers of Mumbai like no other event.
