Interview: “A radio show usually has no story, its primary function is to provide infotainment”. MJ Nitin

MJ Nitin from 92.7 BIG FM Delhi is India's most awarded RJ started CSR on radio. He started his RJ career in the year 1999 with AIR, more than a decade ago and is one of the popular RJs in the industry.

The Music Jockey has been felicitated with numerous prestigious awards like; RAPA, Promaxx and Paranshree award. He is also the recipient of 3 Media Federation of India Awards, 2 ’Indian Achiever’s award’ for the ‘Best Radio Jockey’ across India for CSR initiatives on radio and 3 prestigious ’New York Festival awards’. He has also been awarded the title of ‘Most Popular Radio Jockey of Delhi’ by Ormax Media.

Besides being an MJ, he has been a television presenter, well-known theatre artist and has produced over 45 plays.

In a freewheeling interview with Verus Ferreira, he shares his experience as an MJ and his other interests.

How different is theatre from radio and the overall experience in your point of view:

Theatre is an absolutely different medium than radio. The only similarity being, there’s a live audience in theatre and radio too. Theatre involves actors and the performers portray themselves as characters and therefore aren’t usually themselves in the act. Radio is real; the radio jockeys in most cases are not impersonating someone and are just themselves on the show. There’s a story in theatre and it’s usually a one way communication where the audience gets the feeling of being part of the story that unfolds on stage. A radio show usually has no story, its primary function is to provide infotainment.

What would you have been if not a Music Jockey?

I would have definitely been a Chef. That’s what I am actually good at. I love cooking and baking. Recently I was certified to become the First Pastry Chef RJ of India after successful completion of my training at the Academy of Pastry Arts Gurgaon.

Which international Radio Jockey you really admire?

I’ve always been a fan of Howard Stern and have heard quite a few of his shows. Though the content of his shows is quite different, I’ve always admired his delivery. The ease and command that he does his shows with are absolutely inspirational.

Which talk show you really enjoy and look forward to watch?

There isn’t a specific talk show that I like watching, but I love listening to Anu Kapoorji in ‘Suhana Safar’ on Big FM. The man is an archive of Bollywood. His knowledge in Bollywood trivia is unmatched.

Lastly can you tell us any funny incident that has happened to you during one of your shows?

The funniest incident during my shows happened years ago but I just can’t get over it, This was when I started my radio career and in those days you had to play the station jingle from a spool tape roll, I wound it and cued it and then at the precise moment when I went on Air and played it, the darn spool snapped and flew in the air and started rolling in the floor and I kept pulling at it and there was tape roll all over the studio when the Manager incharge rushed in as there was nothing playing. And the moment he saw me chasing the spool roll in the studio, he was rolling on the floor laughing. The icing on the cake being, it was my first ever show on radio.
