Queens rapper and rising cultural icon, Anik Khan, is dropping wisdom, truth and new music. Big Fax, the title for which has more to do with modern politics than a throwback to 90s office culture, is his latest single and accompanying video, out worldwide today. This is Khan’s newest work since his 2017 full-length EP, Kites, which he released independently to high acclaim, sold-out shows and a thriving fanbase. Big Fax is launching through Artist Originals (AO), an initiative from global streaming service, Saavn, to develop and distribute new music with independent artists from around the world.
Khan's energetic presence, thoughtful material and passion for his roots and immigrant culture (his family moved from Bangladesh to Astoria when he was 4 years old) has captured the attention of not only South Asian diaspora, but the likes of Ebro Darden, Zane Lowe, and Elton John on Beats 1 Radio.
With marquee lyrics like "Damn, it feels good to be an immigrant" and "Men lie, women lie, stats don't", Khan’s latest track offers a playful and empowering anthem that is as culturally relevant as it is dancefloor worthy.
The music video is a visual love letter to his Bengali roots and the ethnic diversity of Queens, NY -- from eating with his hands to a decked-out rickshaw to bangle-adorned women. In fact, the clothing used in the video is part of Khan’s own line of apparel that is both a fashion statement, as well as a cultural statement.
“It’s more than just the music. I wanted to show people the layers to my artistry. I conceptualized quite a few looks, from the ‘Foreign’ velour sweatsuit inspired by Nas' ‘Stillmatic’ cover to the ‘Queens’ jersey, which is a tribute to Prodigy's ‘Shook Ones’ video, while paying homage to Stack Bundles and Chinx Drugz,” Khan says.
Ultimately, Khan brings a new perspective and unexplored representation of South Asians. Speaking on the South Asian experience in America, he continues: “I want people to see brown men in a different light - not only as only cab drivers and deli clerks. In the video, you see me as a boss who's calling the shots with women protecting me, just as they have been all my life. And the best part is, we’re having a good time.”
Khan’s ability to remain independent while plugging into the increasingly digital and streaming-based music industry led him to AO and the largest music streaming service focused on the South Asian market.
Speaking on the partnership, Khan says: “I couldn’t think of a more fitting company than Saavn to partner with for this release. To see a company owned and operated by people who look like me and share the same mindset is inspiring and humbling. They share the same energy and passion to drive culture forward and their team really cares about the artists under their umbrella."
Big Fax is available to stream or download on global platforms.
