SVKM’s NMIMS – School of Performing Arts, an institute that offers city’s first-degree programme on western music organised a workshop by legendary Trilok Gurtu. Famous for his international collaborations Gurtu, has especially came to guide young artists who want to enter in the world music.

“Today’s youth holds an incredible potential; I want them to be coached in such a way that they represent us at an international level. These workshops are just a small effort from my end to see a large number of young Indian musicians in the line of acclaimed international artists,” said Trilok Gurtu.

By making an alliance with artists such as John McLaughlin, Joe Zawinul, Jan Garbarek, Don Cherry, Bill Evans, Pharoah Sanders, Trilok Gurtu has attracted a world-class set of collaborators. By the time western music has become an established genre, Trilok had already “ploughed his own furrow” with his own group which earned him a nickname ‘A Serial Collaborator’.

Following with talks on the western genre and upcoming industrial trends, Gurtu shared his experiences on how he has enthralled his audiences by his compositions that linked Indian rhythms with elements of modern jazz and rock.

Speaking about the workshop, Gurtu said, “The time spent with young artists was amazing. We all had great fun and we are looking forward to interacting again during the course and also in the industry.”

The two hours’ workshop organised at the NMIMS school of Performing Arts was fascinatingly packed  with fun, knowledge and insight of the music industry. Launched in May 2018, the performing art school in collaboration with Furtados School of Music aims all-round development of 21st-century musician. 

“ Our degree programme hold a responsibility to impart the right curriculum and environment our students. Such workshops with legendary artists are a major part of our course which makes our teaching an on-ground experience,” said Dr. Divya Shrivastava, the associate dean and associate professor of SVKM’S NMIMS – School of Performing Arts.
