The versatile globetrotting Raja Kumari has her plate full at all times. The rapper, singer and songwriter traces her roots to America and India. It’s that blend of ambitions and cultures that makes her such an exciting artist. After honing her pen, crafting hits for the likes of Gwen Stefani, Iggy Azalea and Fifth Harmony, she launched a solo career in 2016. Her sophomore EP ‘Bloodline’ followed earlier this year. Now we’re about to see a whole new dimension to her. She partnered with Sony for Raja Kumari: So Far. Directed by Zoé Salicrup Junco, the short documentary film illuminates her journey in the music industry.

A relatable story, Raja’s story is about searching for a space to belong. For her, that became possible when she left Los Angeles for Mumbai. In the new city, the “Karma” siren came into herself as an artist. “It was beautiful because it was a creative space where I could truly be myself,” she says. “It was just acceptance. And that really gave me freedom as a creator to really explore.” Of course, there were a few bumps along the way. However, she opens up about a passion that keeps her going: to “become the artist that I needed when I was growing up.”

“What if in five years, in 10 years, there’s a girl that grew up listening to me that becomes one of the greatest artists of all time and wins a Grammy coming out of India? I want to see that future.” Elaborating on the goal, Raja said, “Many girls can relate to my experience of growing up without seeing anyone like me in media. It’s been a struggle to overcome stereotypes and stigmas in the music industry, but I’ve continued fighting these battles so more young girls can know that they too can forge their own lane, and achieve anything themselves,” she explained.

“I hope this film will inspire and empower more young girls to manifest and accomplish their dreams.”
