In its second edition Red Bull Premieres showcases four incredible tracks by Parimal Shais ft. Hanumankind, Karan Kanchan ft. Ramya Pothuri, yesnomaybe and Anushka. The releases have been curated by Spryk, producer, DJ, founder of Skip-A-Beat, an online radio show record label, and one of the country’s most exciting mixed media artists.
Bengaluru-based rapper Hanumankind and Kochi-based producer Parimal Shais are frequent collaborators from south India, whose cultural influences deeply inspire their music. Their respective releases over the past year were hailed as amongst the best, quickly making them sought-after names in Indian hip-hop. With this edition, they release S.L.A.B, a track they teamed up to create after first connecting when Shais was working on his album Kumari Kandam Trap Vol. I.
The second track comes from Karan Kanchan, a trap and bass music producer, and Ramya Pothuri, a singer-songwriter. The song, Wonder, marks their first collaboration. A departure from Kanchan’s usual sound, Wonder features the vocal stylings of Pothuri, for a more pop sound. Says Spryk, on choosing this track, “Wonderstood out to me because it’s so different to everything I have heard Karan do. Ramya brings such a strong and beautiful voice complemented by Karan working with a palette that is much softer and subtler than his usual sound. They are both incredible artists and it’s great to hear them coming together to explore new styles.“
Yesnomaybe, the solo project of new media artist Akshat Nauriyal, provides track three, with The Other.A new media deep dive into digital existentialism,Nauriyal has an EP in the works under the moniker along with more augmented reality filters. “I've had the opening groove and bassline for The Other – which form the core of the song – for over a year,” says Nauriyal, on creating this song. “But it's only about a month or so ago that the opening verse came to me in a frenzied moment. And that really pushed the song forward, things started falling into place, or well, at least I felt they did.”
A seasoned hand on the subcontinental indie soundscape, Anushka gives the second edition of Red Bull Premieres Take, a track that deals with internet trolling and her response to it. “The track is open to the interpretation of the listener. However, the lyrics were inspired from trolling, something that as artists we all face at some point in our careers if not all the time. We are constantly criticized, scrutinized, compared with others, judged, and most of the time shot down," says Anushka. Well-known as a photographer and a DJ, as an artist Anushka’s sonic style is constantly evolving, innately exploratory and yet distinctively recognisable. Characterised by a firm grounding in electronica, her DJ sets are layered with bass heavy beats and edgy breaks ultimately ensconced in a darker, moody veneer.
