It’s an empowering time to be alive. Six female rappers along with a B-girl got together in late 2020 after two of them (Krantinaari and Hashtagpretty) initiated bringing a group of girls together, and named themselves Wild Wild Women. The aim was to highlight female artists in a hip hop scene dominated by male artists. Not only this, but Wild Wild Women was also founded on the ideology of encouraging more women to work together and see the diversity in our Indian hip hop community.
Their debut single as a collective, I Do It For Hip Hop, will be out on Women’s Day, that is today, 8th March 2021. The six rappers include - MC Mahila (Shruti Raut), Hashtagpretty (Preeti N Sutar), Krantinaari (Ashwini Hiremath), JQueen (Jacqulin Lucas), MC PEP/Pratika (Pratika E Prabhune) and Demyth (Driti K Panchmatia). Along with breakdancer B-Girl Flowraw, the girls conducted their first all-female cypher at Marol Art Village’s Bharat Van park in Andheri, Mumbai on 3rd January 2021.
Following the response they received, they decided to pick a theme and write a song introducing all the girls for the first time. I Do It For Hip Hop is about each of the rapper’s beginnings and how they got to this point in life. The beat for the song is produced by 17-year-old Poshak (Anirudha Khavale). The video for the song was also shot and edited by Pratika (MC PEP) at Sahar Village in Andheri East, Mumbai.
Wild Wild Women hope to create a larger and more sustainable community within just the women in hip hop eventually, featuring artists beyond their core team and collaborating on projects, be it more dancers, B-girls, graffiti artists, makeup artists, designers, social activists, and much more.
