Mugen Rao. Ben Human. Teejay. Ramya Raj. Stephen Zechariah - while these names may not have been familiar to most people a year or two ago, they now have a fan following among Tamil music listeners and in India’s independent music scene. Tamil Nadu has already come a long way from the upbeat & evergreen Kollywood music to embrace the emerging rap scene, and the thriving Indie artist community is producing fresh sounds that appeal to global listeners.
Taking that freshness to an all-time high is Enjoy Enjaami the latest track by Dhee, Arivu and Santhosh Narayanan. The song, released on AR Rahman’s music platform Maajja, is a tribute to India’s ancestors from marginalised communities and celebrates their spirit in coexisting with nature. It is perhaps one of the best examples of how independent music has the power to move audiences, with deep storytelling.
In less than two weeks, the track is already somewhat of a phenomenon on audio streaming platform Spotify. It has been curated in 11 Spotify playlists, including 2 international ones, and already been added to over 20,000 user playlists on the platform.
The catchy indie song has already crossed more than 2 million streams on Spotify and made its way into Spotify’s Top 50 - India and the Top 50 - Malaysia charts. It seems like the world is Enjoy(ing) Enjaami with the highest volume of streams coming in not just from the southern cities of India but also from across the world, including Kuala Lumpur, Toronto, London, Dubai, Colombo, Paris, and Zurich. The top countries streaming the song - in addition to India - include Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, US, and UK.
