Not many may know that Indian iconic rock band 'Rock Machine/Indus Creed’s first drummer was Suresh Badricha. Some may remember him playing with a band called 'Aqua Flow', a regular fixture at some of Goa's biggest events in the 90's.
Around five years ago Suresh suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed, but this did not stop him from supporting his wife and two kids by continuing to teach drums with one hand. Of late he developed more serious medical complications and has been hospitalized with mounting bills that the family cannot afford. After suffering a stroke, Badricha was admitted to Malad’s Thunga Hospital with a large subdural hematoma, a condition where there is internal bleeding in the brain. A crowd funding campaign to raise the required funds was started by his son Zeal.
His son has appealed for help online and managed to raise part of the required five lakhs through crowd funding. Jazz Goa along with Slip Disc Goa has stepped in to help Suresh with an online fund raiser featuring artistes from Goa, across India and around the world.”When I heard about the crowd funding that Badricha’s song initiated, I sensed the desperation that the family might be going through and decided to help them out. Almost all artistes I approached, agreed spontaneously, without thinking twice “says musician and music producer Colin D’Cruz of Jazz Goa.
Badricha went on to perform with several acts including the legendary Maurice Concessio and Braz Gonsalves bands. D’Cruz recalls that he first met Badricha in the late 80s when they played with Concessio and Gonsalves. Badricha also performed with Jazz Goa's Colin D'Cruz on a residency at Mumbai's JW Marriott hotel.”I remember him as one of the most intense drummers around, his spontaneous drumming brought many a song to life” quips D’Cruz.
The musical night will bring together around 50 artists, and will open with the Rock Machine song Top of the Rock. The lineup includes band members from Indus Creed, Uday Benegal, Usha Uthup, Gary Lawyer, Gerard Machado, Jan Gravenson (UK), Laura Fernandes (Canada), young Goan singer – drummer Malaika de Souza and the bands - Smoking Chutney and Jazz Junction.
Hopefully, this show will raise the required amount and offer some relief to the distressed family. So far the amount raised from crowd funding is Rs. 1, 50,000 of the required Rs 5, 50,000 for the treatment. The goal is to raise the remaining Rs. 4, 00,000.
The show 'Songs for Suresh' is free and open to all. It goes live on Jazz Goa's YouTube channel on 15th August at 8pm IST.
