BBC 2 supported singer-songwriter Druv Kent’s final release from his high-energy, and chart-topping sophomore EP Don’t Burn Away, may be the perfect musical nucleus to a climate change revolution.
All the tracks on the Don’t Burn Away a 5- song EP are composed and written by Druv Kent about burning issues keeping him up at night. Four of the tracks, including In Your Name, are produced by the superstar UK based Calum MacColl (Ronan Keating) andSimon Edwards (David Gray).
The song In Your Name is of hope in a world beset by an intermingled refugee, climate and economic crisis that needs big and bold solutions. The unusual melodic feel lends a sense of space and other - worldliness that allows Kent’s voice to pierce clearly through.
Kent’s lyrics adorn the stunning video visuals that highlight the stress, tension and the hope to not let the situation continue ... or as he says “You build your walls so fortified, into pieces you divide, raise your weapons with no shame, don’t let this happen in your name”. The song seems directed as much at ourselves as it is at our leaders.
The track Don’t Burn Away is a song of hope and a call to change how we treat our planet. The song’s retro groove creeps inside further with each listen, as Druv sings, “... when your world is getting sold, and your sun is turning cold, find the light that’s in your soul, don’t let it burn away”. The stirring video captures the fragility of our Earth overheating, while young dancer Tahira Pandit brings us the promise of a better tomorrow.
The song Higher Ground grabs you with its racy pulse, dreamy lyrics and hooky chorus bursting with “Can’t tell you where you’re going, or what you’re going to be ... when your music is flowing, you have found ... your higher ground”. The jaw dropping aerial video is by Alpine filmmaker Guillaume Broust.
The song Bit At a Time is about losing your innocence growing up. As Kent sings, “you miss the little boy, there’s a man inside the child, he stops to smile ... a little bit at a time”, it’s personal, haunting and resonates stronger given the age we live in. The animated video directed by longtime Kent collaborator TED Fellow filmmaker Puneet Rakheja highlights the simple elegance of the narrative and lets the hypnotic bass and synth do the rest.
In the COVID inspired bluesy Till We Meet Again, Kent captures that sense of distance we feel today, singing, “Take this weight off my shoulders, I need to breathe again” with intimate video clips of an int’l caste.
After Druv’s singles Back Home, Glitter & Dynamite, Long When We’re Gone, I’m Still Riding, What It’s All About and Little Bit of God opened the UK, Australia and international markets to a unique voice of socially-relevant contemporary music, Druv delivered 2 Hindi songs in 2019, a cricket world cup anthem and Hindustan Meri Jaan, that took the Indian music scene by storm. The Druv Kent Band has performs in the UK, Europe, Dubai, HK & India and Singapore’s biggest stages. They recently headlined the Asia Television Awards and the Kasauli Lit Fest.
