Nikhil D’Souza ropes in Grammy winning producer Martin Terefe for new single ‘Desert Island’

Dropping another gem from his wide repertoire of independent music, singer-songwriter Nikhil D’Souza just released his new single Desert Island, working together with Grammy award winning producer Martin Terefe. This marks new heights in cross border collaborations for indie music with Terefe bringing in his expertise producing music with acclaimed international stars such as Jason Mraz, KT Tunstall and Mike Posner. Desert Island also taps into the expertise of Nikhil’s long time co-writer, Jeff Cohen.

Desert Island is a song about 2 people finding each other after going through tough relationships. There’s the hope that together they could be so much more, an island unto themselves, leaving the past behind.

Talking about his new track, Nikhil D’souza said, “Desert Island gave me an opportunity to collaborate with yet another set of talented international musicians. We used multi-instruments and got in a synth to introduce the song and form the instrumental layer over which the vocals sit. The lyrics are also very surrealist which makes this song very special for me”.

Desert Island is released with a very intensely captured video narrating a story of self-discovery and self-care, about allowing yourself to accept the love you deserve. People often convince themselves that they don’t deserve to be loved. They close the doors to their heart and good willing people cannot enter. They get stuck in their ways and live life the only way they think is right. This takes a toll and eventually it gets worse.

The central character enacts “The feeling of accepting love and giving yourself a chance to fall in love again”. The other important aspect the video captures is around the stigma of break-ups and divorce which is usually negative. We assume the people never loved each other or the stars were never aligned for them, it ends up becoming a toxic cycle of blame which hurts both the people in the relationship and their families. This video shows the other side to this, “Just because two people love each other, they aren’t always meant to be together”. The video is directed and produced by the very creative duo of Gaurav Saha and Cian Dias.

Desert Island is out now on all streaming platforms.
