Singer and composer passed away on Tuesday at the age of 69 in Mumbai.
Bappi Lahiri was credited for getting the disco ball spinning in Bollywood, that got the entire country dancing to his tunes. This earned him the title ‘Disco King’, thanks to his work on films such as Disco Dancer, Namak Halaal, Dance Dance, Commando and many others.
Reports reveal he was ailing for some time and died at CritiCare Hospital, Navi Mumbai, due to Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Personalities from all walks of life paid tribute to Lahiri, including prime Minister Narendra Modi, actors, actresses and those from the film fraternity.
In April 2021, the singer was admitted to the ICU of the Breach Candy hospital as a precautionary measure after testing positive for the Corona virus.
Dressed in his trademark golden chains and glasses, Lahiri was an instantly recognizable figure around Mumbai. Born Alokesh Lahiri to a family of classical music singers in West Bengal, he relocated to Mumbai after composing music for Bengali films. His maternal uncle, Kishore Kumar, was a famous Bollywood singer and Lahiri arrived in Bombay, as it was known then in the 1970’s, with some existing Hindi film connections. Lahiri was known for popularizing disco music to the Indian mainstream, and experienced huge success in the 1980s and 90s.
Lahiri is survived by his wife Chitrani Lahiri, children Bappa Lahiri and Rema Lahiri.
An official statement was released by the late composer’s family announced that his funeral will take place on Thursday.
