In our follow up to 'World Music Day', we also have one among many artists who will be performing on Vh1 and MTV on World Music Day.
Deepa Unnikrishnan aka Dee MC is a prominent figure in the Indian hip hop community. Having represented India internationally in UK (Alchemy Festival by Southbank Centre), Canada (DesiFest) as well as Belgium (La Belle Hip Hop Festival), Deeappeared as herself in the film "Gully Boy" released in 2019.
“It was way back in childhood when I fell in love with music. I started out with being a dancer and the first thing that attracted me was the music, its groove and feel. 2011 is when my brain started paying attention to hip-hop and rap music. So, I started by-hearting words. In 2017, I got to go for my first international tour in the UK and that gave me confidence boost” says Dee MC.
Dee MC will be performing on World Music Day for Vh1 & MTV in collaboration with Loreal and is pleased on the collaboration. “Vh1, I have good relations with for a long time. There is a day for everything now-a-day so why not music. I feel this is a great initiative. Music is for everyday and so it feels good to come together and celebrate this day. I will be performing Hathi mera Sathi a recent video of mine”, while adding that“This song talks about female sexuality and masturbation in a very playful manner. The idea behind the song was writing music gives me bliss but everyone loved the song because of its title. The topic is hushed and considered as a taboo, so I wanted to work on it and bust the myth”.
Dee MC loves performing her original work too. “When artists make a song, the true depiction of who they are comes out. ‘Savera’ resonates with me and is that song. Given a choice, I always sing my originals”.
Dee MC knows how to draw the line between work and personal life and makes time for disconnecting from work when the time permits. “Talking about things that I enjoy and am comfortable with helps me maintain the balance because I make music for myself and my female fans”.
Since on-ground concerts are slowly rising, Dee MC says that virtual concerts go hand in hand with on-ground concerts, though the preference would always be for on ground concerts. “I love on-ground concerts. When I am on stage, I want people to be there and listen to me sing. I am an introvert and through music I try to reflect my extrovert side”.
Dee MC draws inspiration from the everyday events and says that if budding musicians don’t have genuine interest in something, don’t do it for the sake of it. “Do something that you really love” she signs off.
