Celebrating 75 years of Independence, The National Centre for the Performing Arts announces ‘Bandish’ to honor great Indian composers

Indian music is based around a well-structured melodic and rhythmic composition known as Bandish. It represents a central idea or base upon which a performance is sculpted and created. Celebrating 75 years of Independence, this 3-day musical festival will showcase some iconic music of legendary composers from the pre-independence, and post-independence eras of Indian history.

The National Centre for the Performing Art (NCPA) Mumbai in association with HSBC is all set to present the 13th edition of this three-day festival with renowned artistes like Rahul Deshpande, Ulhas Kashalkar, Shekhar Sen, Manjusha Patil Kulkarni, Abhijeet Ghoshal, Shantanu Moitra, Shaan, Vijay Prakash, Sadhana Sargam, Antara Chowdhury and Adriz Ghosh, that will showcase some of the most treasured works of the great composers.

Starting 15th July, eminent vocalists Rahul Deshpande and Ulhas Kashalkar will perform treasured works of Hindustani music composers: Kumar Gandharva, Vasantrao Deshpande, Gajananrao Joshi, Dinkar Kaikini and Ramashreya Jha. Rahul Deshpande has been mentored by several reputed teachers including Mukul Shivputra and Gangadharbua Pimpalkhare. Deeply inspired by Kumar Gandharva’s music, Deshpande is a versatile vocalist with a wide-ranging repertoire. The performance will include bada and chhota khayal, natyageet and nirguni bhajan. Performing alongside is Ulhas Kashalkar who is endowed with a mellifluous voice and has an impeccable command over a wide range of well-known and rare ragas. His repertoire will showcase music that has a harmonious blend of Gwalior, Agra and Jaipur traditions.

Day 2 (16th July) will see stalwarts like Shekhar Sen curating Bhakti Sangeet ki Indradhanushi Yatra: a bouquet of devotional forms. Senis a celebrated music composer, lyricist and an actor who is internationally known for his super-hit monoact musical plays: Tulsidas, Kabir, Vivekanand and Soordas. As a versatile singer, his vast collection includes doha, pad, bhajan, geet and other allied forms. The event will also include some interesting and unknown treasures presented by artistes from the folk & tribal communities from the remotest places of our multi-cultural country. 

The last day 17th July, will see the baton of Shantanu Moitra presenting ‘A Tribute to Salil Chowdhury’, the renowned music composer known for his many landmark Bollywood films. He along with a group of prominent singers will showcase some evergreen works of Chowdhury, along with his daughter Antara Chowdhury sharing reminiscences about the maestro. Antara, who is also a well-known singer,will end the musical festival on a high note with multiple performances by Shaan, Vijay Prakash, Sadhana Sargam and Adriz Ghosh. The ensemble will be supported by a group of 20-instrumentalists including musicians of the Symphony Orchestra of India.
