Calling for freedom for all, Punjabi-Australian vocalist Parvyn is releasing her 70s and 80s disco inspired anthem of self expression Free To Be Myself out 14th August. Her first new music since her ARIA nominated debut record Sa, ‘Free To Be Myself’ sees Parvyn returning to a big band sound reminiscent of her work in The Bombay Royale, and is the first taste of her upcoming album Maujuda, slated for release on Friday 1 November. The song and the accompanying music video release falls during South Asian Heritage Month (UK).
Blending her South Asian ancestry and musical training with disco and soul, Free To Be Myself is a joyful retro dive into her love for partner and musical collaborator Josh Bennett and the newfound balance of her identity. Recorded live with a Canadian band, the track was produced by an all female production team Mary Jane HIFI (Mary Ancheta and Jane Aurora). Between the banging horns, sizzling tambourine, the groove of tabla, and improvised vocal riffs, sit catchy melodies and gospel choir harmonies championing Parvyn’s message for acceptance without prejudice.
"I want this song to represent the joy you can find in living an authentic life but also give hope that all people can live freely and safely in this world.” says Parvyn.
The vibrant accompanying video for Free To Be Myself was made in collaboration with award winning South Australian director Alice Yang, whose work is known for diverse on screen storytelling and shedding light on the experience and existence of Asian diaspora. The visuals play on the importance of surrounding yourself with a community that elevates your best self, with Parvyn centred amongst her band and friends. Set in a thrift shop, a nod to Parvyn’s ethos of sustainable living, the video features psychedelic interstellar travel, a myriad of dance styles, and a variety of elements of her personality; a bold and colourful celebration of diversity with a message of self love.
Best known for her work in Bollywood inspired psychedelic rock band The Bombay Royale, Parvyn has been touring globally since childhood with her father Dya Singh. Immersed in a reflective world of different cultures and perspectives, her solo project presents her blend of genre-drifting flow state pop with classical Indian raga melodies and rhythm. Her debut album ‘Sa’ was nominated for ‘Best World Music Album of the Year’ at the 2022 ARIA’s,
alongside the Australian Music Prize and AusIndies ‘Best Independent Soul/ RnB Album’, capturing audiences across Australia with her ethereal inimitable vocals.
Parvyn's radiant expression of self love and liberation is sure to have you groovin' along!
