A dazzling evening with 14-year-old child prodigy Hiya Agarwal

On 20th December 2024, the auditorium of India International Centre was abuzz with anticipation as the audience gathered for a solo Bharatanatyam recital by the remarkably talented Hiya Agarwal. At just 14 years old, Hiya’s performance embodied an eloquence and maturity beyond her years, leaving the audience mesmerized by her seamless blend of technique and expression.

The esteemed chief Guests who graced this occasion were celebrated Kathak exponent Pandit Deepak Maharaj, Shrimati Anukriti Vishwakarma and renowned vocalist Padma Bhushan Pandit Sajan Mishra ji alongwith Shrimati Kavita Mishra ji.

The recital opened with a heartfelt floral offering to the divine, set to Raga Nattai and Talam Aadi. Hiya’s fluid movements and precise postures set the tone for the evening, invoking a spiritual aura that captivated the audience.

The second item, a Kauthuvam dedicated to Lord Nataraja, transported the audience to the spiritual traditions of temple processions. With the lilting notes of Raga Hamsadhwani and rhythmic beats of Talam Aadi, Hiya brought forth the essence of devotion through her dynamic and intricate footwork.

The centrepiece of the evening was a Varnam in Raga Shankarabharanam and Talam Aadi. This emotionally charged narrative showcased Hiya’s ability to portray the longing of a nayika for Lord Vishnu with unparalleled depth. Her expressions vividly depicted the heartfelt plea to her friend, and the nuanced gestures conveyed the intricate story with clarity and grace. Hiya’s stamina and control during this extended piece were nothing short of commendable.

A lighter yet equally evocative touch came with “Shyam Tori,” set to Raga Sivaranjani. In this playful Surdas bhajan, Hiya portrayed Radha’s mischievous desire to reverse roles with Krishna, a performance choreographed with a perfect balance of humour and Shringara. Her impeccable timing and expressions drew audible appreciation from the audience.

The recital transitioned into the tender portrayal of motherly affection with “Thumak Chalat Rama Chandra,” in Raga Pilu. Hiya embodied the joy and wonder of a mother watching baby Rama take his first steps, capturing the innocence of childhood with charm and sensitivity. The subtlety of her abhinaya brought tears to the eyes of many in the audience.

The evening concluded with a high-energy Tillana in Raga Hamsanandi. The piece was a dazzling display of Hiya’s technical prowess, as she executed complex rhythmic patterns with precision, closing the performance on a vibrant and celebratory note.

Hiya Agarwal’s performance was a testimony to years of rigorous training under the guidance of her Guru Smt. Rashmi Khanna. Her dedication, natural flair, and deep connection to Bharatanatyam are evident, making her a promising young star in the world of classical dance.

Hiya was accompanied by her Guru Shrimati Rashmi Khanna on the nattuvangam, Shri G Elangovan on vocals, Shri M V Chandershekar on the mridangam and Shri G Raghuraman on the flute.
