Kolkata-based guitarist Jaimin Rajani finds his ‘Techno Girl’

Kolkata-based guitarist Jaimin Rajani’s debut song of synth-pop, appropriately titled Techno Girl (featuring National Animal), is certainly unexpected but then again, keeping in mind Jaimin’s catalogue of varied songs, listeners should have been prepared to listen to the missing genres from his repertoire.

Techno Girl, with its keyboard-opening before a guitar joins in, sounds like a musical blast of the past – think late ‘70s here when the New Romantics movement was first introduced where a number of UK/European bands adopted synthesizers and helped develop the synth-pop sound of the early 1980s – containing obvious elements that have become Jaimin's trademarks: smooth melodies, suave rhythms, and pleasant vocals. The track features Subharaj Ghosh on guitar and Sambit Deshmukhya on electric piano, supported by effective production courtesy National Animal, mixerSomdev Thakur, and mastering engineerAbhijit Tenny Roy.

“The song is about the experience of vastly different lifestyles driving a wedge between two people,” explains lyricist, composer, singer Jaimin,“as one prefers a world of wild parties and techno beats, while the other is a wallflower who feels out of place in that scene.”

“With this release,” adds Jaimin, “I'm venturing into the unfamiliar territory of pop and electronic music, which is my collaborator, National Animal's forte. Despite being stylistically worlds apart, we decided to merge our sounds to see what comes out.”

For those not aware of Jaimin’s antecedents, the Kolkata-based singer-songwriter usually writes songs in the traditions offolk and rock music, without shying awayfrom baring his soul through his lyrics. In additionto winning the Clef Music Award, his compositions have received praise from illustrious musicians such as The Who’s Pete Townshend and John Sebastian, who made an impromptu appearance at the Woodstock festival in 1969, and Scarlet Rivera, an American violinistbest known for her work with Bob Dylan, among other international musicians.

But the common thread throughout the song remains Jaimin’s compositional skills as Techno Girl, released on 14th February, is certainly worth checking out, remaining easily accessible listening, much like Jaimin Rajani’sprevious recordings.
