Fazal Qureshi to play a tribute concert in memoriam of legendary tabla maestro Ustad Allarakha on his 96th birth anniversary

Music is transcendent, resplendent and universal but when performed in memory of a legend, it is mystic and touches the soul. Resonating this thought, renowned tabla player, Fazal Qureshi the son of the legendary Tabla Maestro Ustad Allarakha celebrates the legacy of his father and Guru on the occasion of his 96th birth anniversary. Uniting with talents from the music fraternity, Fazal Qureshi pays homage to Abbaji in a concertwhich will connect3 distinct worlds of symphonyand which is scheduled to be held on 13th May 2015 at St Andrews Auditorium, Bandra, Mumbai.

A disciple of Mian Kader Baksh, the great guru of the Punjab gharana, Ustad Allarakha was, in his lifetime, the most celebrated exponent of this style. He was the recipient of many awards and titles including Padmashree, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the IndoAmerican Achievement Award, the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar and a first-ever gold disc for a classical recording, to name a few.

Marking the occasion with a unique amalgamation, ‘…The Journey continues’ presents the concept ‘Connecting 3 Worlds’ this year with artists from India, Middle East and Europe coming together for an unforgettable Instrumental performance of Tabla, Oud, Saxophone and flute to create a blend of Indian ragas and rhythm, Middle Eastern makam, Swedish folk and European jazz. The concert is a unique combination of Indian and Arabic classical music genres. The concept rejuvenates the spirit of Ustad Allarakha’s philosophy, his symphonic learnings continued by the next generation of musicians who are the torch bearers of the legendary journey of music.

The concert will see on stage seven performing artists –Tabla player Fazal Qureshi, Santoor player Rahul Sharma, Saxophonist Andres Hagberg, Oud Soloist Ahmad Al-Khatib, Guitarist Sanjay Divecha, Sarangi player Sabir Khan and Multi percussionist Varun Sunil. The concert will be hosted by renowned theatre personality Darshan Jariwala.
