Jayanth R, aka The Sine Painter selected for the Red Bull Music Academy, Papon special guest.

The 17th edition of the Red Bull Music Academy will take place in Paris from October 25th to November 27th 2015, bringing together 61 hand-selected producers, vocalists, beat-makers, instrumentalists and DJs from 37 countries. They will attend intimate lecture sessions and collaborate on music in an expansive, custom-built creative studio space, contained within the acclaimed space for digital culture in the heart of Paris, La Gaîtélyrique.

From October 25th to November 27th the Red Bull Music Academy will touch down in Paris to curate a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary culture program of music events, workshops, public lectures, and art exhibitions.

Hailed by the New York Times as “the most thoughtfully organized of music festivals”in the city in 2014, the Academy has left a lasting impression on the world’s foremost creative hotbeds. Traversing the globe since 1998, the Red Bull Music Academy has established itself as the music world’s leading institution for fostering creative exchange between the innovative vanguard of local scenes, and international talent both emerging and foundational.

Returning to Europe for the first time since 2011, the 2015 Red Bull Music Academy will be held in the vibrant metropolis of Paris. Few cities match Paris’dual significance as a historical hub of creativity and incubator of influential contemporary culture, contributing to some of the most important breakthroughs in the fields of music, art, fashion, film, and design for centuries. However, Paris is far from being frozen in time, and this collision of tradition and progression makes the City of Light an ideal match for the Academy as we celebrate forefathers and futurists alike.

For the duration of five weeks, 61 participants from 37 different countries are invited to work on music together in the state-of-the-art recording facilities at the Academy’s headquarters at La Gaîtélyrique, which will also house our bespoke lecture program for the Class of 2015. The acclaimed space for digital culture in the 3rd arrondissement will open its doors to the public for multiple Academy events and concerts, as well as the multi-faceted Paris Musique Club exhibition.

One of India’s emerging, immensely talented electronic music producers - Jayanth R, aka The Sine Painter, from Bangalore has been selected for the Red Bull Music Academy this year. In addition, Angaraag Mahanta, aka Papon, will be a special guest at the Academy.

Previous editions of the Red Bull Music Academy have also seen some outstanding Indian participants, including drummer & music producer Jivraj Singh, mohan-veena player Jeet Gupta and music producer Sonal D’Silva, who got to collaborate with fellow musicians in the Academy’s custom-built studios and perform at the most iconic venues. Monica Dogra, actress, singer and one half of the electro rock duo Shaa'ir + Func, also visited the Academy as a guest artist while it was held in Tokyo, last year.

From October 24th 2015 to January 31st 2016, Red Bull Music Academy joins forces with La Gaîtélyrique to curate Paris Musique Club. A series of installations created by Scale collective explores the intersections between music and digital art, and invites visitors to interact with the works. Additionally, 12 trailblazing and specially appointed local collectives, including Garage MU, In Paradisum, SNTWN and Antinote, will take turns in presenting uniquely expansive realizations of their musical visions at La Gaîtélyrique through a series of live performances, listening sessions, screenings, and more.

Over the course of the Academy month, we will celebrate different generations of France’s musical vanguard at our headquarters and in a multitude of venues throughout the city. Electronic pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre will sit down for a rare public lecture, and so will legendary disco producer, composer and drummer Cerrone. Presenting his impressive Contrepoint live show for the first time ever, Nicolas Godin of much-loved electronica duo Air will share the bill with the magnificent LætitiaSadier of Stereolab at La Gaîtélyrique.

In the Academy tradition of teaming up with leading local music festivals and clubbing institutions, we present our two after parties at the Pitchfork Paris Music Festival featuring Omar S, GalcherLustwerk, Nosaj Thing and Stwo, among others, as well as the official Pitchfork Paris Club Night. At Grande Halle de la Villette, we invite Academy alumnus Hudson Mohawke to present his live show, followed by a back-to-back set from esteemed selectors John Talabot and Roman Flügel. French techno godfather Laurent Garnier will close this night of Academy family action in high style.

The world-famous Rex Club—a true Paris institution —will host our night with French electronic music’s enfant terrible, Mr. Oizo, who will be joined by L.I.E.S. Records head Ron Morelli, Minimal Wave founder Veronica Vasicka, Frankfurt techno legend The Mover, and more. The celebrated Concrete series meanwhile will provide the backdrop for a massive farewell fête for Modeselektor’s50WEAPONS imprint. The revered German label with firm ties to the French house and techno scene officially says goodbye for good with sets by Modeselektor, Shed, Bambounou and Fjakk, as well as Academy alumni Doc Daneeka and Benjamin Damage. Teaming up with local collectives Yard and Free Your Funk, we’ll put on a massive celebration of French hip hop, both old and new, covering a diverse spectrum of live performances and beatmaker showcases.

In addition, Red Bull Music Academy will bring some of the most exciting performers from a variety of genres to Paris. Doom metal greats Sunn O))) will fill YOYO with noise, smoke, and possibly a hint of fear, while South Central’s jazz ambassador Kamasi Washington holds a more stargazing musical mass at Le Trabendo. Producer, DJ, neuroscientist, former Academy lecturer, and Eglo Records head Dr. Sam Shepherd will present his Floating Points Ensemble in a traditional jazz venue setting at New Morning, while Arcade Fire co-conspirators Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld will play alongside Brooklyn avant-metal outfit Liturgy at former leather factory La Maroquinerie.

The final party on November 27th at La Gaîtélyrique will host an all-star lineup of French selectors and producers currently shaping the sound of contemporary French dance, experimental, and bass music. It will arrive on the heels of a series of Red Bull Music Academy short films, titled Paris Now!, which will uncover stories about Paris’contemporary creative scene that best embody the cultural reverberations of this city felt by the entire world. A carefully selected group of international directors will each create one film, among them multidisciplinary artist and Mr. Oizo alter ego Quentin Dupieux, A$AP Rocky’s go-to director Dexter Navy, and celebrated web artist Anne Horel.

As the event program unfolds at La Gaîtelyrique and throughout the city, the 61 hand-selected participants —a highly international group that includes Baton Rouge producer Suicideyear, rising Dutch vocalist Sevdaliza, Norway’s bass hotshot Drippin, Mexico City’s goth-pop songstress Dani Shivers, French producers OK Lou and Keight, and many more —will attend the Academy’s signature lecture program. The participants will furthermore use the Academy’s state-of-the-art recording facilities to collaborate on music together, while a team of studio tutors including Modeselektor, Thundercat, Just Blaze and Dorian Concept will provide mentoring help, and work side-by-side with the Class of 2015 around the clock.
