Taufiq Qureshi and his band Surya are all set to perform world fusion music concert in aid of In Defense of Animals (India). Bollywood actress the ravishing Ravenna Tandon and Boman Irani will grace the occasion, which is part of In Defense of Animals (IDA) annual fundraiser.
In Defense of Animals is an a charitable trust registered with the Charity Commissioner that provides critical care for ill / injured homeless dogs and cats, and help with the spay/neuter program.
In 2016 IDA completed 20 years of service to animals. From a small beginning in two garages at a housing society in Bhandup, sterilizing just 20-25 dogs per month, they now sterilize 1200 dogs per month from three centres at Deonar, Navi Mumbai and New Panvel. They also have a small centre at Lonavala to help animals in the region of Khandala-Lonavala.
Besides sterilization, they also perform other life saving surgeries approx. 120 every month, for animals with hernia, hematoma, tumour, and requiring amputation of limbs, extraction of infected eyes and teeth, venereal growth, and so on.
Treatment of ill / injured animals is a mammoth task that they also undertake. Every month they help nearly 300 injured / ill animals, some of them with minor ailments through Mobile Clinics rendering on the spot treatment on the road, and serious cases being admitted at the centres.
They also help stray cats, and have spay/neuter program, and treatment for them. Cats are housed in separate cat wards with individual cages to house them.
Nearly 44 blind dogs are sheltered by at their centre in an exclusive Blind Dogs Ward, because if are back to the streets, without vision they run the risk of getting run over by heavy traffic. Besides these blind dogs, they have about 40 handicapped / very old dogs sheltered in their centre.
So every month they reach out to nearly 2000 dogs and cats. To undertake this herculean task they have a huge staff of 101 employees including 8 full time Veterinary Doctors, 4 visiting Surgeons, Managers, Ambulance Drivers, Dog Catchers, Helpline Operators, Animal Welfare Officers, Ward Boys and so on. Management is purely on honorary basis by the Trustees.
They also have 11 animal ambulances running to nook and corner of the three mega cities, to bring in animals in distress.
All donations given are tax exempt under Section 80-G of Income Tax Act.
