Julius Packiam, Bollywood’s seasoned music director

Julius Packiam is a Mumbai-based music director for over 25 years having worked as a composer, arranger, and producer for various ads, jingles, blockbuster Bollywood movies, feature films, and audio-visual presentations. 

His careful attention for detail be it a thirty second ad jingle or a full length feature has brought him big chartbusters like Ek Tha TigerDhoom 3GundayKickBajrangi BhaijaanSultan, and the most recent, Tubelight. Packiam’s earlier work include movies like Kabul ExpressNew YorkBadmash Company, etc. He is the brains behind some of the most popular jingles heard on commercial media like Pepsi, Coke, Nokia, Samsung, Panasonic, Nestle, Hero Honda, Maruti, Mac Donald’s, Maggie, Mother Dairy, Stic Pens, Horlicks, Parker Pens, Tupperware, Aviva, Reckett, SBCH, Hundai, Haldiram, Whirlpool etc. One of Packiam’s most popular work as a music director is for the famous television series, “Galli Galli Sim Sim”- India’s first children’s educational programme. Known to be a regular with director Kabir Khan, Packiam has an enormous body of work to his credit in the industry. Having an outstanding, tightly-knit team of talented western and Indian musicians and composers at his disposal, Packiam works with highly skilled technicians and post-production personnels that he has been working with for many years. 

Born into a musical family of fourteen children, Packiam has had a healthy diet of music through his earlier years which engrained a fundamental sense of rhythm and melody in him. His first encounter with film music, The Star Wars soundtrack on a vinyl had a huge impact which instilled the dream of being a composer and writing such music one day. Originally form Delhi, he started off as a singer through his schooling years singing at hotels, competitions, collaborating with various musicians which helped him build a large vocabulary of music. Initially, Packiam was scoring ads, jingles, documentaries, and other such alternative works until later, when he shifted to Mumbai to pursue film music so he could fully express his creative self. 

During his journey as a music director, Packiam has primarily been a background score composer besides his other commercial work. For his first project, Kabul Express, he was nominated at the 2006 Filmfare Awards under the ‘Best Background Music’ category. Since then, he has won the ‘Best Background Music’ Award for Dhoom 3 at the Indian Recording Arts Awards 2014; Nominated for ‘Best Background Score’ for Kick and won The Screen Award for Mardaani in 2015; National Award for Fiddlers on the Thatch for ‘Best Background Score’; and most recently won The Screen Award 2016 for Bajrangi Bhaijaan for ‘Best Background Score’. 

Currently, he is working on the score of Tiger Zinda Hai which is expected to hit screens later this year.
