Thalia – Thalia (Virgin Records)

One of the more exciting new pop debuts in early 2003 was a female artist is Thalia, who gives a thorough 14 no-nonsense songs flipping through different genres at the press of a button.

Thalia possesses a voice that’s pure, deep and strong which mixes heartfelt commentary and swinging rap interludes. Named one of People Espanol magazine’s 25 most beautiful people, this Mexican is well known on the Latino-pop scene. After her winning streak with Spanish songs, her self-titled English debut that also includes Spanish version of 4 songs has lyrics that shift from faith in divine love to faith in true love.

The album kicks off with I want you which is one of the highlights of the album featuring hip-hop superstar Fat Joe. First listen itself and you’ll probably say it’s a replica of a Jennifer Lopez/LL Cool J number. Thalia’s impressive timing is remarkable and shows her coolness all over There’s passion on Baby I’m in love rendered with minimum effort and ease.

The 10 English songs are well crafted with each other. Jumping a few places you could not miss Thalia giving you positive message in the slightly dance-fused replayable Don’t look back letting you keep the past aside and move on with life. More on the dance edge and Thalia serves you with a little rocky edge in Tu Y Yo, with Dance Dance a perfect dancehall favorite, packed with an urgent rhythm and catchy melody that could be swallowed by the DJs, coming at the end of her English pieces.

Though not much of a real balladic queen, Thalia’s album is a mix of dance and ballads. All the songs are professionally crafted and sweetly sung. Not a well-known name yet, she endures credit, and can’t but help sing from the heart, even on the most disposable songs such as, Another Girl, and Misbehavin or even What’s it gonna be boy. On the slightly bouncy we have, Closer to You and Save the Day.

Thalia captivates without fuss and clutter. Thalia has a good voice and has learned how to use it well. Though there are no big names here, she performs well in solitude. It’s something to look forward to. Her music is enjoyable, (even the Spanish versions) engaging music to nourish both heart and soul and for the feet. Very absorbing.

Rating: ***1/2
