Keane – Strangers – Double Disc (Import)

This 2 disc DVD should be a part of any die hard Keane fan collection. This DVD set offers an insight into the band via a documentary filmed in black and white of the lads out on tour, capturing the ups and downs of life, out on the road, living in the back of a bus and the frictions this causes amongst them.

Lead vocalist Tom Chaplin, keyboardist, primary song-writer Tim Rice-Oxley and drummer Richard Hughes, all offer very open Q & A, clearly and candidly recalling how they got to where they are and the musical journey they have been through. They also offer some never before seen old home-movie footage which all add to making it as some of the highlights of the film, as they shed light on the types of gigs and digs the band took on in sometime in 1998, prior to landing a major record label deal. This holds true when they share stories of the time they shared the stage with another up-and-coming band known as Coldplay. There’s lot of black and white footage with candid, on the spot interviews that you’ll rarely see.

The DVD itself, especially the documentary part and the additional hidden documentary really gives us a look inside this band's music. There's a history of how the band came together, a past member, and how Tom came to join, which he modestly admits 'made the band'. It shows us what they're like when they're not on stage, their thoughts and feelings, and Tim's explanations of the songs are quite interesting.

Like any DVD set, there are live performances from various shows they have done all over the world, so you have live performances from New York and London. You cannot miss out the tracks including Sunshine, Somewhere Only We Know, She has no time, Your eyes open, Allenmade, Bend and Break, Bedshaped and Your Eyes Open, among many others. There are lots of hidden sections, where all videos are included, like Somewhere only we know and Everybody's changing UK and US versions.

The downer here is that each Disc has Documentary 1 and Documentary 2. You are able to see the documentary and the live performances in each disc from the main menu. But if you want to see the videos you are forced to watch the documentary. It would have been best to put all the music (live and videos) in one disc and the documentary on the other.

Keane is known for their piano-driven songs, soft melodies and vocals that make you want to join in. Entertaining all the same. They come across as very likeable, down to fellows who have sadly not been around since the last few years with just a few albums and song that we’d deem memorable. Let’s treasure the music we have from them till then.

Don’t miss the 6 page booklet with black and white images and details on the DVD.
