Concert for Diana (Double Disc) (Import)

“This concert is our way of remembering her the way we knew her- full of fun and laughter, and full of a love of life… It’s got to be the best birthday present she’s ever had.. And this is how she would want to be remembered” – Prince William and Prince Harry.

And so it was, when over 62,000 attended the concert to celebrate Princess Diana's life. This is a 2 disc set that has everything broadcast during the concert (and I think more). It's nicely packaged and set up as you have the option of either listening to it all straight or picking your own mix of singers you like.

The concert was produced on HDTV and broadcast live around the globe to over 140 countries. It was a live broadcast from the then brand new Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday 1st July 2007 to commemorate the life of Princess Diana on what would have been her 46th birthday.

Princess Diana's favorite performer, Sir Elton John, was on hand to help her sons Prince William and Prince Harry to also mark the 10th anniversary of their mother's death (31st August 1997) with an event to celebrate her life.

As for the concert itself, Elton John did nicely in the beginning singing Your Song, followed by Di's favorite music group, Duran Duran, with a lively Rio. After that were Fergie and Nelly Furtado with their own brand of songs. Then came a lovely duet with Tom Jones and Joss Stone, both looking radiant. Rod Stewart was in his element as he sang his 1971 hit Maggie May, which he still enjoys singing the hell out of though. You couldn’t miss him and his antics of kicking soccer balls to the crowd.

You had a bit of hip hop coming in the form of Diddy aka Puff Daddy) performed I'll Be Missing You which contained a sample of The Police's Every Breath You Take and directly mentions Diana by name as smiling up there in the heavens to the audiences' pleasure.

The artists came in with their own tributes to the great Lady who died in a car accident on 31st August 1997 while escaping from paparazzi.Live on stage were other notable artists like  Fergie, Kanye West, Take That, Nelly Furtado, James Morrison, The Feeling, Pharrell Williams, Roger Hodgson of Supertramp doing his Breakfast in America medley, (Dreamer, The Logical Song, Give A Little Bit) which seemed to be the crowd favorites. There’s also Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Sarah Brightman, Osmond, Jason Donovan and many more. The best highlight was the English National Ballet doing an excerpt from Swan Lake and a collection of songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals.

Finally, after Elton John closed with Saturday Nights All Right For Fighting and William and Harry thanked the audience, you are treated to early childhood home movies of Diana, from when she was born to her early teenage life. Tributes also poured in from Bill Clinton, Tony Blair and Nelson Mandela. All in all, a most enjoyable hour that left you wanting more.

Among the extra bonus on these DVDs are The Diana films that places heavy emphasis on Princess Diana's charitable activities (and is itself a benefit for those charities). Interspersed between the musical performances is a series of films called "Diana & Me," testimonials to the princess in which she is remembered for her visits to the blind, the deaf, the sick, and the physically challenged. Over and over, the people heard in these films recall trips made by Diana to see them, marveling at how down to earth and friendly she was, as clips and photographs show her shaking hands and posing. It all comes off as the height of noblesse oblige, as a golden-haired, fashionably dressed young woman lends her status and star power to those much less well off, who are appropriately grateful.

The five-hour show, would be well worth owning for just about anyone who not only loves music, but also for the love of Lady Diana as she was known. Very enjoyable and entertaining, from the very beginning.  There are so many stars in the concert that you probably have never seen before in one sitting. What a great show. No question, the lineup of the artists and the performances offered are unparalleled; for this reason alone, the DVD is extremely worth buying and seeing. A great collection by the two Princes who put it together for their mother, the late Princess Diana.

Do check out the 10 page color booklet that offers an inside view as to the making of the concert, playlist of songs, images from the concert and notes on the concert.
