Simon & Garfunkel were truly a class act. If you needed any proof, then ‘The Concert In Central Park’ provides ample evidence. One of the blessings of DVD is that this memorable live concert that was held in 19th September 1981 can now be captured and preserved for posterity - and are available for fans to watch repeatedly without fear of decaying quality.
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel that were better known as Simon and Garfunkel had a fairly troubled relationship. Besides ego issues that led them to part ways, they were talented in their own way. The duo produced about four albums, although as soloists Paul Simon has, enjoyed massive success as a solo artist since the duo split up in 1970 with ‘Graceland’ as his topper. Art Garfunkel appeared in a couple of films (Carnal Knowledge, Boxing Helena) and had a few hits of his own. Nobody could disagree that despite their solo careers, they are both at their very best complementing each other perfectly when performing their wonderfully melodic harmonies.
So, after leading their separate careers for a decade, Simon & Garfunkel reunited after a hiatus of 11 years, for a free concert to restore New York City's most famous open air park Central Park. The Concert In Central Park features the duo's greatest hits performed for over 500,000 people, one of the largest concert audiences of all time. The duo worked their old magic, revisiting over twenty of their classic songs like Mrs. Robinson, Homeward Bound, America, Scarborough Fair, Wake Up Little Susie, Slip Slidin' Away, A Heart in New York, to a Medley: Kodachrome/Maybelline, to classics like Bridge Over Troubled Water, Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover, The Boxer and the unforgettable The Sound of Silence' among many more. This DVD provides the opportunity to enjoy what was truly a classic concert time and again.
The audio is of reasonable quality and the 5.1 mix, whilst not outstanding, does provide much more of a feeling of "being there". The video transfer is pretty average considering that it is twenty-two years old, made for television and filmed in a park.
If you are a fan of the music, this is a great reminder of a really memorable concert. Highly recommended for fans of Simon & Garfunkel.
