It’s the month of Elvis’ death anniversary. This month we bring to you two top line DVDs that were must have for fans alike.
In the first fortnight, we have ‘Elvis – The Complete Story’ which takes you through photos, stock footage, and film trailer clips, and offers a chronological survey of the life and movie career of "The King." The film actually shows trailers or scenes from all his 33 movies the man has done.
This is a pretty well-traveled road--so well-traveled that this disc would be more aptly titled Elvis for Beginners. There are all the usual landmarks, especially his relationship with his mother, the oppressive influence of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, the drug use, the Memphis Mafia.
You will see a caring and tormented artist, beloved by millions, who could never come to terms with himself. You will witness his devotion to his mother, his generosity, his mood swings, and his unstoppable musical genius. This two hour documentary special also features original music, rare early television appearances, behind-the-scenes footage, and insightful interviews with some of the King's most famous co-stars.
‘Elvis: The Complete Story’ is a look at the familiar history from the backroads of Memphis to gold paved streets of Hollywood using all 33 of Elvis movies as the words and thoughts to guide you through this documentary. Featured is Elvis' debut performance in Love Me Tender, leading the dramatic roles in ‘Loving you’ and ‘Jailhouse rock’, character parts in ‘King Creole’ and ‘Flaming star’ and continuing on to the colorful adventure comedies of ‘G.I.Blues’, ‘Viva Las Vegas’, and ‘Kid Galahad’.
Many other films followed through the years, until finally Elvis regained his position as the world's top entertainer in his last two mega-hit live performance films: ‘Elvis on tour’ and ‘Elvis, That's the way it is’.
One major highlight is Elvis's appearance on The Frank Sinatra Show, in which the two perform a duet. The disc gets additional credibility from interviews with some of Elvis's costars, including Mary Ann Mobley, Francine York, Sue Ann Langdon, Gary Lockwood, and Julie Parrish. About half of the narration is presented in "the words of Elvis Presley," though the source of these words is never identified. Still, the actor impersonating the voice of Elvis does a good job with what could have easily turned into silliness.
After all, the film would not be "complete" without at least one Elvis impersonator (and this one has two).
A nice addition to an Elvis collection but not something you'll watch often.
